Good evening,Well it has been a while without hearing from me, i have been wondering what to share with you guys but i found it relevant to verify the importance of writing in the PR field.
The new year 2011 began, great things were happening, too much work to be done. One of the interesting task for me was to draft press releases for P1 (Packet one networks Malaysia) one of our clients. The well known 4G Wimax telecommunication company and subsidiary of Green packet Berhad. It was announcing its success in achieving the significant milestone of 280.000 subscribers to its 4G broadband service.
During my placement i improved my writing skills and this was done by looking at the important things while writing a press release. There are few things to observe while writing such as :
- attractive headline- make it interesting
- summary of the story or the lead
- more details, stick to the facts, selecting the angle of your press release
- be conscience and grammatically correct
- quotes can be included
- proper format
Writing is always enjoyable but now that i was working with professionals it was quite challenging as they needed it to be up to standard and neat.

yes dear writing for the corporate world requires good skills, for me what i learned in school came in handy. Every press release has to have a grabber to attract readers. during my placement i was tasked with writing a press release for Poh Kong gallery,one of the biggest jewelery company in malaysia, this was the grabber we came with" POH KONG CELEBRATES THE YEAR-END WITH THREE GLITTERING EVENTS"
One thing i learned was before writing contacts, there is a need to write a company profile.
It does look easy until you have to do it professionally. I remember when I had to write a proposal for the company I worked with, it was so intimidating comparing my writing skills to the rest of the staff. I kept making a big deal out of every point I put down on paper. "is the sentence structure OK?" "is too simple?" "does it sound too rehearsed?" and so on. I have to say this Instant messaging habit has really affected my writing skills, of course not in a good way. Thankfully, with time and lots of practice (and lots of mistakes) you get the hang of it. In the end, I realised the most important thing, is to be fluent in your professional field's vocabulary.
True that, i agree with you Thato and also practice makes perfect. At first i believed that i'm not good in writing and trust me i ended up enjoying.
Fiffie i get your point, i felt the same way, i kept on checking sentence structures time and again. Of coarse we are not in the same level them but one day we will be doing it professionally. So far so good, we are heading there.
