post 3- relationship with the media

As a company it is very important to maintain a good relationship with the media. this is because  the media acts as an intermediary between the company and the target audience. The media passes information to the general public, it is therefore important  to maintain a good relationship with them  to ensure their loyalty  and also to have a positive coverage from them. Having media relations is an advantage to any company because you might need them for event coverage and for advertising because media is the most effective medium available for advertising today, from billboards to electronic media to print media, it is the best way to reach your target audience.

In the company i was with, keeping close ties with the media was very important. they made it a point to keep in touch with the  media companies around Botswana, be it radio or newspapers. For example one afternoon we got a call from one of the leading radio stations in Botswana (Rb 2) and they needed one of our financial advisors to be interviewed in one of their talk shows. The reason why they thought of our company was because the company always invited them to their events, or sent them greeting cards and even gift baskets. It was really an honor that the radio station thought of our company before any other. I was asked to go with the company advisor to the radio station and help him where necessary, that meant preparing all the information about the company and success stories so that I would help him out if he got stuck in the interview.

this to me was a great experience as a communications major student because not only did it expose me to being a public relations practitioner but also to being a journalist.
