Relevance of Social Media in Public Relations

When you’re a PR student, you’re surrounded by social media. It’s drilled into your brain.
Words like “blogging, Facebook, word press and “tweeting” are part of your daily vocabulary.
When you’re surrounded by the Social Media hype 24/7, you may forget a simple concept:
Those outside of the PR bubble are not so knowledgeable- or enthusiastic- about social media.

It is hard to get people excited about something they’re not familiar with. Social media is a daily
thing for us, so it’s hard to understand why anyone would not “get” it. I will be interesting to see
how social media becomes more of a “daily” routine in the average person’s life…

I completely agree with you...

My placement was at the City of Rockingham and they currently do not employ the use of social media.

If organisations want to connect with their stakeholders, they need to keep up technology and have some social media presence.

My report reccommendations will definately touch on this!

Hey guys...

Well, I must say I agree with you guys that it would be interesting to see social media becoming more of a “daily” routine in everyone`s average daily life.
However, I believe that there are so many reasons why people are not really into social media one reason would be because of their culture. For example taking a country like Malaysia, people here put more emphasize on their culture and religion. In addition to that, they are doing everything that they can to make sure that it doesn`t becoming dynamic despite developments taking place therefore majority of them prefer traditional media. According to a survey carry out PR professional in Malaysia they found out that traditional media is still perceived as the influential media for communication http://www.asiamediamonitors.com/insights/media-influencers-survey-findings. That is why where I was interning they were not really into social media because they understand their target audience`s preference.

As a PR student I would say what matters mostly is to understand the kind of public’s you are dealing with and their preferences that`s when they will be interested and excited in whatever you offer them.

I have had trouble with this at my placement. Essentially there is one person who handles the Rocky Bay Facebook and social media in general.

They are only allowed to use it for promoting their "Future Model" fundraising event. This is because most of the contestants in this event are in the "social media" age group.

The higher management at Rocky Bay doesn't want to use social media and Facebook because they are afraid that it might be confused with their current web page.

I think my frustrations come from exactly what you said in your blog, I have a much better understanding of social media than some of the people at Rocky Bay. Social media can be used effectively as part of an overall Public Relations strategy.

One of the other things holding back Rocky Bay from social media is their ageing marketing team. This isn't to say they cannot do it, it's just they don't understand it right now. Perhaps some training is in order!!

This too is one of the recommendations I will be making in my report.

social media not only becoming more of a daily routine in everyone's life, it is a really a uncontrollable resources. When i worked with my internship client, our colleague had totally no idea on halting the negative remarks towards organisations. It really a powerful medium to spread out the news no matter it is positive or negative.

Social media is another challenge to PR practitioner.

You have to look at a lot of factors before using the social media, first its the kind of business you are doing and also you target audience..If maybe your target audience is the elderly then social media wouldn't be appropriate..

The social media has changed the practices of PR as for now the consultancy firms do more to accommodate the use of social media while communicating with thier stakeholders. The social media gives the updates of information instantly which make it, the great tool of marketing tool and keeping the communication with their stakeholders and clients.Even where i was place they are not much in using the social media as thier communication tool. The PR industry in two years will use more of social media than old media.
