Although I've just passed the halfway mark for my internship with Therapy Focus I'll take you back to my first couple of weeks on the job. After having my heart set on this internship with the not-for-profit company I got offered the position and started the following week. Therapy Focus is a not-for-profit community service organisation providing therapy and support services to children and young people with a disability or learning disadvantage. The focus of the internship was to organise and co-ordinate Therapy Focus' involvement in the 2011 Perth Royal Show which to me seemed like a perfect learning opportunity in the workplace one of my career goals is to work in event management, and it meant working closely with people and young children and planning fun and exciting activities for them.
Although this would be the focus of my internship, the first event I helped work on at Therapy Focus was the launch of their children's flipbook storybook "I Am Special" and "Jarrahs Jigsaw". The book had been written by Therapy Focus to educate children about disability and inclusion and children from WA had the chance to draw the illustrations for the book, with the winners drawings being published. The book was being launched at Karrinyup shopping centre with all the winners being presented with a range of prizes and certificates. My first job for the event was to attempt my first media release. I also did a range of other jobs for the launch such as creating the certificates, editing the Therapy Focus facebook page with information about the winners and the launch, creating display material for the launch and other jobs. Some jobs were fun and exciting while others, such as bulk laminating, were not my strong suit!
The day of the event was fairly hectic with everyone being under a lot of pressure, and as expected with events last minute things going wrong. After spending the day setting up the event, everything ran smoothly and almost all guests that were expected attended. The children who's drawings were published were presented with their prizes and a copy of the book while their proud families watched on. The event proved to be very successful and it was a rewarding experience getting to part a part of it :)
It has definitely been a good start to my time at Therapy Focus.
I'll keep you posted about the planning for the next major event, the Royal Show.

Wow your internship sounds amazing and what’s even better it sounds like your thoroughly enjoying it and will take away something special from the time you spent there.
I can’t believe your getting such a ‘hands on’ experience while you’re there, I will admit I am a little jealous!
At my internship at the RRR Network, they currently don’t hold any events, so I haven’t had the chance to feel that hectic feeling of the last few minutes before the event, or the satisfaction afterwards like you have. However I do know what it feels like to laminate for hours!
I wish you lots of luck at the Royal Show and can’t wait to hear how it all went.
