The Halfway Mark

Today is the tenth day of my placement and officially marks the halfway point. My last post was only five days ago but I can't believe how much has changed in that time. I've really begun to settle in and am looking forward to each day that I get to spend here. I've also been involved with some more exciting tasks in the last few days.

I was asked to write a small feature article on a top fundraiser in the Freeway Bike Hike for Asthma. I was understandably nervous, as this was my first opportunity to put the writing skills I have learnt at Curtin into practice and I didn't want to disappoint. Before I began I browsed through some old media releases to ascertain the style of writing used by the Foundation and did a quick bit of research. I also contacted the fundraiser to get some quotes that I could use in the article. I quickly wrote up a draft and sent it off to the Marketing and Communication manager for editing. I was thrilled to find that my article only needed minor changes and would be featured on both the Asthma WA website and Freeway Bike Hike website. To read the articles click

In my last post I spoke about how the smoke haze over Perth had attracted some great media opportunities. As the week rounded out I learnt first-hand the uncontrollable nature of public relations. As I mentioned previously Geof Parry came in to conduct an interview with one of our asthma educators. In order to get the brand out we had an Asthma WA banner on display and placed Mary, our educator, in an Asthma WA shirt. When the interview went to air on the 6pm news however, only a small snippet of the interview was used and the Asthma WA logo was not visible at all due to a bad camera shot. Whilst the objective of the interview was to get vital information out to the community; it is a shame that it wasn't a more lucrative PR opportunity.

With only two weeks to go until the Freeway Bike Hike for Asthma, things are sure to start getting quite busy. I'll be sure to keep you all updated!
