In 2011, His Excellency the President of Botswana, came up with an initiative that every month ministries should come up with programmes of giving back to the community (Corporate Social Responsibility). Since then, the Ministry of Health has conducted various community service activities through its District Health Management Team (DHMTs).
The Public Relations Office was responsible for running community service days (CSD). Every employee of the MoH was expected to participate in these activities. What happened was, the Directors of each department were assigned to choose atleast 3 employees who would partake in that month's CSD (since these activities were arranged to take part every month from February until November 2012).
My first solo task was to prepare a PR Plan report for community service days and I had the opportunity of attending the February CSD which was held at Extension 14 Clinic (Gaborone). The guests included the Minister of Health, Rev. Hon. Dr John G.N. Seakgosing, the Honorable Assistant Minister, Gaotlhaetse Matlhabaphiri, the Mayor of Gaborone Hon. Councilor Haskins Nkaigwa, the District Commissioner Mr Fraiser Tlhoiwe, members of the community and a few MoH employees.

Later on, there was ground breaking by the Minister. All guests engaged in cultivating and planting some vegetables in the clinic garden.

Giving back to the community is one of the tasks that are mostly done in Public Relations. I hope that this was a great experience for you and that you have learnt a lot from it. I guess that the organization you were working for is well for the great community work it has done and that people appreciate it. Well done.
Community Relations is very important and this really shows that the MoH takes an active interest in the well-being of its community, and through this it can gain a better community support and loyalty.
I guess this was an eye opening activity you were involved in if so thats really interesting.
Corporate social responsibility is an important part of an organization, it ensures that the organization is able to give back to the public and in the process creating and strengthening a relationship with the stakeholders. so i think what your organization did was a brilliant practice.
