End of semester is nearing as is my
placement. Apologies for the lack of
blog posts, with all these ends creeping closer and closer the life of this
little intern has been pretty busy, as I’m sure all yours have been!
Anyway onto this blog entry….
Part of Devahasdin’s services include
events. When the time calls for it, they
organize events for their clients. Event
management is, in my opinion, one of the most under estimated parts of PR. What seems like a simple, basic event has in
fact taken months of preparation, back and forth meetings to sort out budgets
and the nitty-gritty specifics so that it runs smoothly and is successful for
the client. I was lucky enough to have
recently worked on another event for Devahasdin. This time it was for their client
Bethanie. Bethanie Group is a not for
profit aged care provider and the event was to open the new Dementia wing at
Riversea, an aged care facility. The event and opening came at the perfect time
as The Federal Government recently announced $3.7 billion overhaul of Australia’s
aged-care system so pitching to media was a lot easier and the opening of the
new wing became a bit more relevant and newsworthy to them. The Premier even
stopped by to give a speech, unveil a sculpture that will be placed in the new
wing and to officially open the wing.
My tasks on the day were to organize and
hand out nametags, to give cues to the music entertainment and caterers, to
brief the photographer so he would be able to get the important shots and any
other bits and pieces to ensure the event ran smoothly. All in all it was
another great learning experience and another fun day in my internship!

Hi Jeacinta! I totally agree with you that event management is, one of the most underestimated parts of PR.
I was also lucky enough to be given the opportunity to be a part of a recent event held by my company. It was a wedding roadshow and boy, it took us about two months to prepare for the event. We had countless meetings and the budget was one of our biggest problem. It really wasn't something easy to organize an event and at the same time staying within budget.
My colleagues and I cracked our brains trying to think of a good and cheap door gift for the event. We also had to look for souvenirs and medals which will not cost us a lot, and that was challenging task. Most of the souvenirs and medals that we came across were either low quality but cheap or the other way round. We finally managed to look for the perfect ones though, after hunting high and low.
Undoubtedly, planning and organizing an event is never an easy task. It is important to work together as a team and manage our time wisely.
