I am
Delvina and currently on my final lap in completing my undergraduate degree at
Curtin Singapore
MAX PR is a fast-growing independent PR agency based in Singapore
The PR agency consists of only six people including myself. My main role in the agency is media monitoring/ media clippings, materials development, social media updates (Facebook), media list updates, event help, desk research and reports, and other ad-hoc tasks.
Media Monitoring/ Media Clippings
There
are various newspapers which I have to go through every morning. My role is mainly
to look for news in print media that has references to a specific client and
the agency’s designated topics of interest, to record them down and to clip the
client’s coverage. Other than from the print media, I would also need to
monitor and clip news articles from the Internet, and from various business e-newsletters that my
colleagues had assigned to me.
Materials Development
Till
now, I have helped to do up part of the wrap-up report for the agency’s two
clients. I am tasked to collate all the media coverage of the clients into the
PowerPoint slides as well as to research for the circulation numbers that each
publications and websites have.
Social Media updates (Facebook)
I am
tasked to update the Facebook statutes for a client thrice a week. These updates
include post-event comments and other health related news (as the client is
from a healthcare industry).
Media List updates
The
update of media list is quite a taxing job as I had to go through many
different publications and Internet websites from both Singapore and
international. But I feel this job is an important one as there are frequent
changes within the various media themselves, where some journalists either
resigned or transferred to another department. As such, it is important for us
to keep our media list updated, and thus able to pitch the stories of our
clients to the right media, with the right contacts. Delvina Chiang

It sounds like you have scored yourself a really hands on and relevant placement, lucky you! I definitely relate to the difference from the classroom and the real working world. I too have completed media monitoring, an important and time consuming job. It is Something we only touched on in uni, defiantly a learning on the job experience.
I am completing my placement at an Australian government department for sports and recreation in their communications department. I found I was surprised by how much I had actually learnt in my degree! It is quite a transition into the real world from uni world but a good one as suddenly all the years studying seem worth it and useful.
Good luck with the rest of your placement, it sounds like you are doing well and are getting lots of great experience to put on your resume from a respectable source.

Hi Delvina,
I hope you've been enjoying your time at Max PR, it sounds like a great boutique PR agency, from which a lot can be learnt. I, too, am currently interning for a boutique PR agency, and have also had to perform similar tasks as you.
I can definitely empathize with you regarding the updating of the media list, it is truly quite a taxing task, as it can get quite tedious, having to cross check the media list with the most updated issues of the publications, as well as calling up the publication's front desk to check on the relevant details.
I hope you were able to adapt and thrive in your internship company, and I do hope that you managed to take away great experience that you can put to use in all your future endeavors!
