Hello guys! It’s me
Gorata Ramogale again, like I promised, I am back, and this time around I want
to share with you about the relationship between journalism and public
relations.
One might wonder if at
all there is any relationship between the two but, believe me you, journalism
and public relations have a mutual interest in communicating clearly with the public. Both
require a curiosity for news and an ability to tell a story beyond just the
facts.
PR practitioners need
Journalists because the media is the largest outlet to inform the public about
their clients. They need
journalists to help them publicize their article so that they can gain
popularity and increase awareness. Journalists
turn to PR practitioners for story pitches, press releases, and quick answers
to their questions.
Although PR and Journalism need each
other somewhere down the line the relationship went sour but like any other
relationship there is room for change and growth. The duo has a love
hate relationship; they are like “Tom and Jerry”. Below are some tips on building media relations.
Write
a strong news release
Follow the style of writing that
journalists use. Make sure that your news release are strong and well-written
so that journalists can look forward to working with you in the future. If the
newspaper is owned by the government then the article should be related to the
government and if it is a private newspaper then the article can even be just a
promotion, even if it can be an advertisement.
Make
yourself available
Always respond to journalists as
quick as possible because when they are looking for information they want it
quickly. So it is for the better you respond as quickly as possible and never
leave a question unanswered. If you cannot respond quickly enough, take the
time and get back to them to explain.
Do
not make promises you cannot keep
Only promise to do your absolute
best to get them what they need as quickly as possible and always follow
through. If you cannot follow through let them know as early as possible.
Thanx for checking this post, thats it for now, until my next post. ciao !!!!!!
