Then there was rain

BLOGPOST NUMBER 2

Okay, I think having a calendar to mark out the time periods would be much clearer for me, and therefore, you. Here we go.
BLUE – Entire time period before the event
GREEN – Actual dates of event
RED – Period the blog post is currently talking about.

At this point of time, we have had the logo finalised, and therefore, able to collate the final designs of the poster. We have taken such a long time because we have aliased with many companies who have sponsored in small amounts, and the organizer had promised to put their logos on every collateral that we make.

Even though we were two weeks away, and still have a ton of work incomplete, it still had not hit us that we were rushing on a deadline. This was probably because this week had coincided with the most hectic week of the semester with 5 assignments due. While trying to juggle the heavy workload, we have subconsciously prioritised school work over the preparations for the workshop.

Still, we still sieved out enough time to hold meetings so as to familiarise ourselves with the other volunteers as well as reshuffle the workload around to suit our specialities.

I was made in charge of managing and creating social media accounts, Facebook, Twitter as well as our official website. The website had already been set up by our keynote speaker, also a friend of the organiser. It was a very good gesture of him, even though the layout of the website was still raw and information was still lacking.

My other work mates, were in charge of sponsorships and the other the media list. The organizer wanted to retain her role of contacting the schools. At this point, she had sent hundreds of emails to all the schools in Singapore, but to no avail, only a handful had replied.

Social media will always be a wonder to me. No one has really learnt the ability of harnessing the powers of social media. It takes a lot of guess and checks to find out the right method of using this media. Worst of all, its different for every industry, every company because they have different target markets. But if they do, the problem would be that, there will always be a company handling it better than you.

What I took away from this is that, for inaugural events, it is always harder to build your publics because you have nothing for them to put their trust in. But then again, with adequate time and planning, to build relationships, invest time in social media, this could very well be a piece of cake.
