Just a brief introduction of the event - The Powerful Self is a two full day complimentary
life-enriching workshop for youths from 16-25 years old. On 2nd and
3rd June, the workshop will be held at Civil Service College’s
Auditorium. There will be complimentary one on one coaching sessions with
professionals life coaches at the end of the workshop.
In this workshop, youths will develop life skills they need
to reach their full potential and also to take in depth look at how they
managed their lives. The first day of the workshop will focus on strengthening
youths’ core values and the second day will be to encourage them to work
towards their dreams. These life messages will be delivered by notable key note
speaker, Mr. Stuart Tan and guest speakers like Mr. Kelvin Lim, Mr. Cayden
Chang and Ms Roshina Ganesa.
The Powerful Self Workshop is basically a workshop set up by my classmate - Kylie Chim. She decided to set up this workshop as she believes in giving back to the society and she hopes that the workshop will be able to touch the lives of all the youths out there. I remember talking to her about the workshop and I was immediately impressed by what she wants to do for the society. As I was looking for an internship then, I asked her if I could help her with the workshop and do it for my internship as well. She must have been really short-handed and she was ecstatic when I offered to help her without a single cost. As two of my friends Charlene and Yijing were looking for an internship as well, I decided to ask both of them to help Kylie for the event and use The Powerful Self Workshop as their internship as well. We were all elated when our tutor said that all three of us could do the internship with The Powerful Self Workshop!
So within a span of just 15 minutes, all 3 of us found ourselves an internship opportunity. The next half an hour however, was a reality check as Kylie started to tell us on all the work that we have to do for the workshop. There were many PR roles we have to take on such as the writing of media releases, the liaison with the media and the implementation of social media platforms. In addition, we had to take up the role of finding 300 participants for the event and the headcount at that point of time was only about 50 participants. This meant that we had to think of ways to increase awareness of the event and improve on the current Marketing strategies. Despite the tedious tasks that we had to take on, I remember being extremely excited about this opportunity as this is the first time that I feel I will be contributing to the society.
On that day itself after class, I remember meeting Kylie, her friend and a potential designer for our workshop. At 11pm, we were discussing on the designing of the marketing collaterals for the workshop. It was the first day Kylie met the designer and she seemed to be pretty nervous as she did not have a certain design in mind. I did give in my two cents worth of designing ideas to the designer - Han and he bought my idea. As he saw that we were very enthusiastic on doing something for the society, he agreed to help us design all our marketing collaterals for free. It was my first achievement during the internship and it made me feel like giving more. What made me really happy was that Han and I clicked well and not only did I found myself an internship opportunity, I found myself a really great friend as well. I guess this is how PR works, meeting new people and realizing how a stranger can help you in such big ways :)
This sums up the first day of my internship. Life, however, being not a bed of roses, lots of problems came out during the next few weeks into the internship. We had many internal and external problems and the three of us were almost at the brink of falling apart. I will talk more of the challenges we faced in the next post and end off this post on a happy note.

It is nice that you are working for a Not-for-Profit cause. I completed my placement with the Western Australian government implementing programs for children. It is rewarding doing this type of work but definitely hard work! There is always the constant worry about money and time.
The best way to tackle the issue of money is all in the approach for asking for donations. Target businesses in which the cause will be relevant.
Marketing the cause will give you good practice of what you learnt at Uni. It is an art to distance yourself from a project that you think is amazing and write in a way to appeal to people who may not think it is amazing, convincing them to love it just as much as you do.

You guys were a real pleasure to work with. I think we have a chemistry for working together that i believe is really hard to find. Even though we met with many many obstacles I am still glad we had each other's back to support, encourage and spur each other on.
Even though this internship has ended, i'm sure there will be lots of opportunities to work with you guys in the future.
