It turned out my first day
in Kingsmen Creative was not as nerve wrecking as I expected it to be. There
were some awkward moments here and there, but my co-workers were all nice and
amicable. Hopefully I will shake off the ‘new guy’ tag soon and begin bonding
with the colleagues and getting some real work done!
So as mentioned, I managed to secure an internship
placement with Kingsmen Creative, courtesy to the referral of a lecturer from
the school. Kingsmen is a communication design and production company based
over 18 countries in the world and it specialises in servicing the following
business segments; Research & Design, Retail & Corporate Interior,
Exhibitions & Events, Thematic & Museums, and Alternative Marketing.
More about my first day- I was first given a virtual
tour of the company by the corporate communicate manager before being handed
over to an executive of the department who gave me a physical tour around the
complex and briefed me of my responsibilities within the department, and the
scope of my first task in the company.
The company is currently in the midst of sorting out
entries sent in from its various subsidiaries from all over the world. The
management at Kingsmen firmly believe that the constant communication between employees
builds and improve the cross functionality of its employees, which is essential
for the fast moving industry of design communication. This led to the
development of its multiple internal communication channels. The annual Kingsmen
Builders and Design Award being 1 of which the company used to keep its
internal stakeholders abreast of the work that each country is producing.
For the bulk of my first week, I was tasked to filter out
entries that do not fulfill the entry criteria, and ensuring that all entries
are accompanied by the required documents and graphics and basically to attend
to any other matters pertaining to the contest.
My other responsibility for the first week was media
monitoring. Surprise surprise? Media monitoring here is very much more
extensive compared what was learnt in the school. The industry that the company
is operating is rather niche so there are very little readily available information,
which makes the task a little more complex.
I think if anything I learnt on my first week in the
company would be that there might be some authenticity to say that PR or
corporate communications generally handle tasks that fall beyond the scope of
the other departments. Will go further into this point on the next post when I write
about the some of the other tasks the corporate communication department here
handles. Tell me your view on this meanwhile.
Oh, just a fun quiz before I end this post. The mascot
of Kingsmen is the humpty dumpty, can anyone guess why? Clue: sing out the
nursery rhyme in your mind. Answer will be reveal in the next post!
So
long people.
