Tree planting and Borneo Jazz

  In conjunction with the Borneo Jazz Festival in Miri, Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak), Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) and several others took part in a tree-planting programme at the university’s campus to mark the recent eighth edition of the event. There were students from Tenby international school, journalists, bloggers and photographers from other countries attended the event. There was a communication error happened during the event whereby the catering wasn’t ready and the guests had to wait for an hour for the refreshment. Fortunately there was one of the bands from the United Stated that would showcase during the Borneo Jazz went on stage to show some performance. Once again, the importance of having good communication had come into play.

  During my intern, I was also given opportunities to volunteer in Borneo Jazz as a media liaison officer for a band from Sweden named, Jump 4 Four. The two days event was held at the Parkcity Evelyn Hotel. My responsibilities was to look after the band, went through the running sheets of the two days event with them, answered their inquiries and led them to places, such as registration room, conference room, hotel rooms and the stage. It was quite a fun experience because I get to meet bands from around the world. Even though it was quite tiring since I had to drive from Senadin all the way down to Parkcity Hotel and during that period of time was also a few of my assignments due date. Thank god I managed to went through the hard time and I think it was worth.

    Throughout the internship, I realized that being a public relations practitioner isn’t an easy job, in order to be professional; we have to equip ourselves with a lot of knowledge, especially current affairs and good understanding of the companies we work with. We have to think fast and act correctly whenever there are emergency situations occur. Communication skills should be empowered in every public relations practitioner because good communication leads to good outcome while bad communication will probably bring disaster. We should also grab opportunities or expose ourselves by volunteering in events as event monitor or media liaison officer in order to gain experience.
