It's Kimberley from the Charles Telfair Institute, Mauritius.
So, last week I went to a cheque remittance ceremony that was organised by one of the clients of the company for which I am doing the internship. The main reason why I wanted to attend this ceremony was to hear the speech I had written for the CEO.. I felt quite excited and proud to know that the CEO of such a big company had been taking words that came out of me when addressing important people, because yeah, the minister of youth and sports was there!
The overall experience of this event was good. I got to see how things go about, met some journalists, seen a minister from so close.. hehe.. The cheques were being awarded to NGOs that were working towards improving the lives and social conditions of young mauritians in need, which I find is a good cause.
And after the ceremony was over, one of my colleagues distributed media releases to the journalists. Here, I learned another procedure that comes with being a PR agent, distributing media releases, and hooooooping that there would be some coverage generated afterwards.. In the case of this event, the response was quite positive due to the importance of the issue and the presence of high profile people. But in many cases, we end up sending media releases without actually being sure that journalists would find it newsworthy enough to publish in their outlet. I find it being quite a shame, knowing how hard PR people work in order to produce media releases and a lot of other things on behalf of their clients.
And I wanted to know, people out there, how are you finding handling both the internship and the courses at the same time and not being able to attend the internship more than 2-3 times a week? Personally I think it draws us away from the company's daily activities, and when we come on our free days, we have to run to them in order to have something to do.. Maybe it is because Mauritius is a small island and that everything is done quickly.. Well, otherwise the job itself is not so bad.. :)
Talk soon guys..

Hi Kimberley!
Wow hearing your speech must have been such an indescribable feeling! I haven't yet had the chance to write a speech at my internship and due to the context of the organisation I don't see the opportunity arising any time soon. I'm impressed! ...and slightly jealous.
I'm from Perth, Australia and nope, it's not just you feeling like you're occasionally drawn away from the business activities that collate during the week. Fortunately for me I work at my organisation two consecutive days a week, so at least it's consistent and easy to plan for. I don't often find myself without something to do, but with that said I have a habit of keeping myself busy. I do find that sometimes I miss opportunities to either cover events, send out media releases or just general activities/duties because I can't be there everyday, or I may only be able to work on some aspects of a project because the rest falls on a day that I'm not around. But I guess that comes with the territory of being an intern, and it's just up to us to prove that we can stay ahead of the game each week :)
Good luck with the rest of your internship!
