Hello, I am here to blog on my experience from the Homeless Persons Walk held back on 10th August 2013. Overall, it was a great experience especially when I have the opportunity to work on this for a cause. Basically the Homeless Persons Walk is a charity event organised by Networking WA and WA Community Housing Coalition aiming to:
1. Raise awareness of Homelessness in the Community
2. Fostering collaboration of services being offered to homeless people
3. Building partnerships between various stakeholders from the
government, private sector, non-for-profit sector, media and the general public
4. Encourage more volunteers and financial support into the sector
The event was held in Forrest Chase, right in the heart of the City of Perth where
we as the Networking WA Team are in charge of setting up the marquee and discuss our roles in charge before the walk commences.
The weather was not really on our side that day, it was pouring rain in the morning
and we were worried that no one will show up.
Despite the bad weather, people slowly showed up
coming up to our booth bringing cans of food to be donated to the homelessness.
It was definitely a heart warming experience to see people actually do care and wants to make a change towards the Homelessness in Western Australia.
In exchange to the canned food, we distributed maracas and big signs for them to show during the walk.
It was amazing to see people from all ages, families, kids and even dogs showed effort to come and support this meaningful event.
Me and four other interns, Asha, Michelle, Cassie and Wibi
were assigned on each area to make sure that the people joining the walk are on the right path and walking together in a group.
The event started off when Mickey J,
a very well known street busker performs in the middle of Forrest Chase to get people's attention
The performance ended shortly due to the pouring rain
but the sun slowly came out when Lord Mayor, Lisa Scaffidi was giving away her speech.
The rains stops shortly and it was just about time for the Walk to begin.
About 150 showed up to the Walk and march along the pathways of Murray and Hay Street walking back towards Forrest Chase.
Once the Walk was completed, it was photo taking sessions and the event was a wrap!
We gather everything, packed up our things and called it a day.
It was tiring but exciting at the same time and
I am very grateful to be able to witness such a meaningful event!
After the event, we were briefed on what went wrong
and how are the ways that could have done better for the next event.
I was asked to blog about my experience in Networking WA's website,
feel free to read more in detail
Before I end, here is a video done by Wibi on the Walk itself!
That is all from me, will blog more experience from my internship soon! :)

Hello Edlyn!
It was a good and meaningful experience as you get to learn something during the event and eventually help those who really needed help. A lot of people have the misconception that public relations is merely creating publicity, but actually it can turn out to be another way round. Hope you have a great day!

Hello Edlyn,
Really enjoyed reading and viewing this blog post. Your work on the Homeless Persons walk is impressive and very admirable. I look forward to using my own PR skills to work on such rewarding projects. Were you involved in a lot of the pre planning for the event? Did you have the chance to apply some of the tools we've learnt in the course? Using running sheets, checklists, etc?
Keep up the awesome work - love the photos.

Hi Kim, thank you for the comment! I really enjoyed volunteering for this event and I have to agree with you on how PR can be applied towards lending a helping hand and spread the awareness to the public!
It also send me a clear message towards this event and I was definitely touched by it. :)
Hi Georgina,
Thank you for your time on reading my post. Yes, I have assist on several tasks during the pre planning of the event. We were assigned to do research on prices for the marquees and banners needed for the event. We also came up with a contingency plan in case of the bad weather occurred but we were very thankful the weather did not fail on us that day.
thanks once again and have a nice day! :D
Kind regards,

Hey Edlyn!
The objectives of the event sound great!
Must have been very meaningful to be part of a great campaign, may I know if you had to have any media interactions? was the media invited to cover the event?
Best,
