Learning is part of the process

Hello all,

This is my fourth entries and in this post, I will briefly explain on the things that I've learn and experienced in my 3 third weeks in RTM Sabah.

Every morning when I arrived at work, I am required to read newspapers and update my supervisor regarding news that is related with RTM and their competitors too. I will be given more than 5 newspapers to read every morning. Hence, in this scenario, RTM biggest competitor is Era FM and Suria FM due to their funding/sponsor and their freewill in running an events compared with RTM. With that, my curiosity on how a PR person does their job especially in an event was answered. Most of the workers in RTM must abide the rules that is stated starting from the layout of a running sheet, the budget that is used in an event, design of a proposal and the event plan.

Furthermore, that other constant thing that I will always do every week is to write a media release, running schedule, checklists, sorting out the budget and confirming every guests that is attending an event. That is like a daily routine in the PR department. We are always busy typing a document, making a phone call or going up and down in managing an event. Teamwork is important as it determine either the tasks that is given can be done on time. It is so hard to complete a tasks when either one of the colleague fail to complete his/her part of work or on-leave. All of us (including me) will be given a specific time or day in finalizing our tasks and if we did not complete it, we have to extend our working hours. Thus, it teaches me about the value of working together and never procrastinates...

The next thing that I like is meeting. Every once or twice a week, the PR department will have their one hour meeting in updating each other with the things that is yet to happen (such as the next event, meeting with other department, field-trip) and the supervisor will give advice about which thing should  focused first. Everyone never fail to contribute and exchange their ideas. In fact, it helps me to improve my communication skills in interacting with different type of peoples.

To summarize the whole thing, I've learn how to write a media release, helped to  organize an event, did the event plan, checklist and running schedule, attend a meeting and interact with all of them, work together as a team, communicate with different type of people through phone call and face to face and enhance my interests in reading newspaper. All of this was taught in my third week there and I feel lucky for given the chance to complete my internship there.

That’s about it & thank you for reading :)

It sounds like a very broad learning experience you went through! Event planning is one particularly interesting learning task I find. Event planning is so much more complicated than people perceive it to be. The pre-planning takes a lot of preparation regardless of the size! My experience with event planning has been one experience that I believe will directly benefit me in the future and I hope you feel the same way!
