Organisation Reputation

A few weeks ago myself and two of my colleagues took a trip out to WASM (the WA School of Mines). It is a Curtin campus and we felt it was important for the Bentley Guild to have a presence out there despite them also having their own sector of the Guild on-campus.

We all agreed afterwards that we were so glad that we did do the trip because it was made abundantly clear that the Curtin Student Guild needs to seriously work on their PR out in Kalgoorlie.

We headed out to Kalgoorlie on the Sunday because the Guild out there was putting on an Oktoberfest celebration. We thought it would be a good opportunity to help out with the event and mingle with students before having meeting with Guild staff and student representatives on the Monday.

By interacting on the students' level and not in formal meetings we were able to gain an understanding of the students' opinion of the Guild and Curtin University as a whole. Overall it wasn't the best for either the Guild or the University.

Many students felt forgotten or like the Bentley campus's poor cousin. On a university level this is due to a lack or resources and funding for the WASM campus as well as severely lacking student services and amenities.

Unfortunately the problem between WASM and the Guild is a little more difficult to figure out as the Guild's work over there is generally viewed in a positive nature. The generally feeling among students is that the Guild doesn't give enough though compared to what they do for Bentley students.

This is a difficult situation for the Bentley Guild as we are limited by how often we can travel to Kalgoorlie and don't want to give too much money to the Guild in Kalgoorlie without keeping an eye on how it is spent.

Clearly the Guild needs to have more of a presence on their campus but being not for profit also obviously budgets are a constraint.

Do you have any ideas of what the Bentley Guild could do to improve stakeholder opinions of the organisation out at WASM?

Hi Shauna,

Funnily enough one of my best friends moved to Kalgoorlie to study Metallurgy at their Curtin campus for a year, last year. From what I can gather from his feedback, there is a lot going on internally within the social scene as most students are living there by themselves/with room mates, and the Guild must be doing SOMETHING right if he's travelling all the way back there this weekend to attend their Guild ball. Due to the nature of the student lifestyle up there, they make tight bonds with each other. Maybe this could be something to consider in regards to offering social events over there? I'm not completely sure what is already offered but perhaps themed quiz nights where groups of room mates/friends get together to compete every Friday or something along those lines might be good (building more Guild traditions)! That way because it's a continuous event it would be a little easier to set up a monitoring and evaluation system as well. Just a suggestion!

Very cool that you got to travel there!
