Reflecting on a valuable experience.

The unit outline for PR393 claims that students often refer to this as one of their favourite units throughout their degree. At the start I was a little sceptical but now as the unit draws to a close, I have to say I'd put myself in that category.

Initially I thought that 20 days of work would be more time than I had ever put into any other unit, but as many of you have mentioned in this blog, the internship time flies. Although the final report is a bit daunting with its 70% weighting, I managed to stay on top of mine and write the majority of it during my internship, which has proved to be a huge advantage.

The business world is all about who you know. This was proved to me during my internship when talking to senior staff members at Cannings Purple, who claimed that education was a given when it came to assessing potential recruits. PR393 has given us all a leg up into the communications industry by connecting the student body with businesses. I only got my internship organised through previous work experience and otherwise wouldn't have had any contact with Cannings Purple.

I can say without a doubt that I am better prepared to start looking for a job as a result of completing this unit. PR393's practical approach has yielded the following benefits:

  • Improved my overall confidence.
  • Increased my understanding of the PR industry, roles and what is required of a grad.
  • Helped me better market myself to potential employers.
  • Given me contacts in the communications industry at a variety of organisations.
  • Helped me to adapt to a full-time lifestyle.
Overall I guess my point is that although this unit seemed like a hassle to begin with, I am now reaping the benefits of the work I have done. If I could have sent a message to myself prior to this uni and now to any future students in this position it would be: just get it done. Don't be hesitant or delay your internship. Once you get started the process flows really well, just make sure you give yourself enough time to juggle other unit workloads at the same time.

Thank you very much PR393 and Cannings Purple. This is the first assignment I'll ever hand in a whole day early. After that, the future awaits.
