The Independent Intern

Working from home can definitely have its upsides and its challenges.

Beginning an internship, for a major Perth event management company and working on your own from home? Definitely an interesting challenge.

Meeting with the director of SWEvents, Shani Wood, I was told that majority of the time I would be interning I would be working remotely, and usually from home.  Unlike any other kind of experience I've had in the public relations industry, the idea of this was both exciting and nerve wrecking.  For the first time I'd be working independently and totally relying on the skills I've acquired through uni and through work experience.

And I have to say I'm rather surprised with just how easily it all came along.  The working environment relies heavily on phone calls, emails and Skype, which means I have to know exactly what information I need, and what information is required from me at the beginning of every working day. Professional communication is an essential part of this team... and so far so good!

I'm positive this internship will do nothing less than dramatically improve my skills and ability to work confidently in the public relations industry, not to mention give me the best on site experience I've had in the events industry.

As part of my placement, I'm not only required to complete set tasks from home, I'm required to attend on site meetings, event set ups (bump in) and the events themselves.  The projects I'll be working on will be the Wesfarmers Centenary Community Concert in Northam, ATCO Gas Launch (which require me to stay in Northam for a few days) and WA Signature Dish.

Exciting times ahead!
