Is visual communication PR?

Welcome back jolly people,

Last time, I gave you a little insight of the experience that I had with regards to my first week of work. The following is an insight with regards to the second week of work.
After having been assigned the management of the Website and Facebook page, I also proposed my help on different other projects needing a revamp.  The making of a new brochure for instance was the ideal job to keep myself occupied.  Now, this topic is subject to debate, does the making of a brochure amount to PR work? Depending upon the perspective that one sees it, it is and it is not.  Let me walk you through the two sides of the force (the Star Wars reference goes out to the fans who celebrated Star Wars day on the 4th of May).

No & Yes?

First, the ideal that it is not a PR job is still a good one.  The actual making of the brochure is not the job of a PR person; however, the structure to be followed, the wordings to be used and the design of the brochure (simplistic & straight to the point) is in fact the job of the PR person.  The making of the brochure itself, using the necessary software and what not, is not the job of the PR person; however, this too is a matter of debate.  If a person abides by the saying “we are better served by ourselves”, and is a perfectionist, then he or she will indeed do the job himself/herself, taking into account that the PR person has the necessary technical skills to manoeuvre the software(s) required.  This is because everything has to be in perfect accordance to the visions of the PR person.

Second, the ideal that the making of the brochure is indeed the job of the PR person is also a good one.  The fact that communication is a very important pillar within a company coupled with the fact that the PR sector has merged different sectors together throughout the years makes visual communication an important part of the field.

What are your views on this?

That’s it for now folks.  Keep in touch for further information on the other projects I’ve been assigned to will be posted in a few days’ time.

Also, do not forget to like our page on Facebook here or visit our website here.

Warm regards,
Swaraj Nunkoo.

Hello there, it looks like you are having a great time at your internship. I believe that creating a brochure is definitely a PR job. PR is such a vast profession and there is so much diversity entailed in the career pathway we have chosen. At the end of the day the brochure you are helping create is something that will be used as a means of two way communication between the organization and a stakeholder(s)- is that not PR? Personally in my internship, I was made to do something similar, I had to design invitations for an annual event that is conducted by the company for their donors. This is also public relations as donors are a very important stakeholder to the company and keeping them engaged, happy and maintaining a two way communication with them is very vital in the success of the organization. Public relations is such a vague career pathway, that amongst its ambiguity there is room for interpretation of what the job entails- we can mould our understanding of the job reflecting our skill set! :)
