The Public Relations Industry: Where lies my future.

Hi everyone! Ever since my internship ended, I have felt a deep void in my life; there’s no need to write about how much I miss working at Mamba! My internship gave me experience of working in a professional advertising and media related organisation. I got the opportunity to have a foretaste of the world of work. I have to say I really enjoyed it and that is why I believe my future lies in the PR industry. In Mauritius as in other places I’m sure, there is a lot of competition among many organisations. However, it is this rivalry that makes companies strive harder to stand out of the lot. I also study journalism and sometimes there’s a conflict between what is ethical in PR and what is ethical in journalism and this may lead to a clash between the two, mostly in times of crisis. As we learnt in our previous PR units, journalists can be your best friends but can mostly be your enemies if you don’t deal with them correctly.

Working in an advertising agency allowed me to gain insight in various fields like advertising, media and PR and needless to say that they are all exciting fields! Looking over my internship I was able to comprehend how PR is a dynamic field where often working under short deadlines and under pressure becomes normal to a person! In PR, you don’t work with the same people or same tools every day; it is not like accounting (I am not criticising, this is just how I view it), in PR you have different clients wanting different ways to use PR for their benefits. When I was working at Mamba, I could see where clients were doing things wrongly and how they could use PR to be more effective.  I was also amazed at the number of companies who did not really know anything about PR and much less about how PR is vital for a company. PR is definitely something I want to do in the future even if it is a difficult field for new graduates to enter in. I know that I still need experience to be able to fully work for an organisation and I’ll work on that as soon as my semester is over.

I hope you people have decided where you want to be in some years; if not don’t panic. You can never be too late to embrace a new career!

Ciao guys, it’s been great to talk about my internship and read about yours! :)

Hi Kritina,

It is good to know that you want to further your career in Public Relations, and I do agree with you when you say it's a competitive profession.

I personally think I would benefit more if I gained some more work experience in the PR field. I was currently doing an internship in a not-for-profit organization. This was my first ever work placement, so I would probably like to know what it is like working in a consultancy or even the corporate sector.

I'm glad your placement went well. Good luck in the future.

Hello Maria,

Thanks for commenting on my post. I completely agree with you about needing more work experience in the PR field to be all set for a real job! I feel that I need more experience to feel accomplished and be ready to tackle the PR world!

Since I have been working in an advertising and communication agency, now, I really want to work in-house or in corporate PR.

I wish you well. May we both have the opportunity of having other exciting internships soon.

I hope that your placement have gone on smoothly. Best of luck in your future endeavors.

Kind Regards,

Kritina
