The role of PR in photo shoots

Hello people!

During my internship, I assisted a good number of photo shoots, which made me realize its importance when it comes to PR. Photo shoots are not just about taking pictures to be used in ads only. There is a lot to be taken into consideration while choosing the pictures and what pictures to take. While assisting photo shoots, I was given the opportunity to voice out my opinions from a PR perspective and this made me reflect on the subject too.

What I could understand while accompanying the photographer of Publico Creative is that a PR practitioner can be quite helpful to assist a photographer for an advertising agency. While the photographer takes into consideration mostly the aesthetic part of the photos, a PR person thinks more in terms of strategies.

For instance, for the corporate photo shoot I assisted at Apollo Bramwell, I found out that it was more appropriate if the makeup artist used less colors and let the makeup be more the 'naked' type so that it appears more formal and professional.

For product photo shoots, we played a lot on the colors to make the product more lively. Clear images with good lightning are the most important things. Larger photos are also more advantageous as they have a bigger impact.

Photos are taken also for PR practitioners to study product placement. As mentioned in my earlier post, as an experience I had to personally go places and take photos of a specific brand I was working for.

Photo shoots and PR are undoubtedly related but before my internship I did not really realize the importance of PR when it comes to photo shoots. I am grateful that I was given the opportunity to accompany the photographer so that I understand the role of PR in photo shoots

Hello Hema,

I certainly do agree with your point that PR persons think more in terms of strategies with regards to the photo shoots organised by various companies. I would also add that PR persons working closely with photographers gives the best result in terms of photos. Furthermore, since PR is interpreted differently, it would seem that the screening of top quality photos to be used for ads as well as other purposes, is the job of the PR person indeed, as visual communications is one very important pillar within the communication world nowadays.

It would also seem that you did quite a lot of manual work during your internship. I hope you had as much fun as I had doing mine.

Warm regards,

Hi hema,
I also did placement with a creative studio and can agree there is an element of Public Relations in commercial photography, specifically 'positioning or branding' direction from the client who's designs or products were being photographed. It is of great important to the brand on how they want to be seen by its publics-- and the tool of photography and post production can assist in offering that vision.
As a PR intern with limited information on what the desires of the client were i didn't make any suggestions on photoshoots. :/ more so i did PR practices that would increase the profile of the photographer i was interning for!

Happy holidays. :)

Hi Hema,

I really appreciated your blog post about how pictures play a big role in Public Relations. This is important to know in the sense how pictures can be portrayed in a powerful way to convey a particular message. Reminds me of our design course where I learned the difference between advertising and PR whereby you give the chance for the audience to think.

Hi Hema,

Wow it would be so exciting to go along to photo shoots! I had a similar experience when assisting at a TV shoot. The PR person see's the 'bigger picture' and acts as a director to the film crew. PR people must be aware of the key messages need to be communicated and not just how pretty something looks!
I think its great that PR people are the creative brains behind an idea, i found this with our graphic designer also where the PR team would say exactly how they want something to look.

Best Wishes
Steph

Its fortunate I knew how to use a DSLR!

Hi! Hema
Very interesting post indeed about the relationship between photo shoots and PR.

Photos are a means of visual communication and as we have learned in one of our earlier units : Making Meanings, there are a lot of underlying meanings in photos used to advertising and marketing.

Even the colours used in some print adverts have been calculated in order to manipulate the attention of the readers. For example the contrast created in adverts for lipsticks where the photo is in black and white and only the lips of the model are shown in bright red. There are countless other examples we can find if we analyze all the ads we see around us.

I have also had the chance to be part of a photo shoot and have been able to have an input from a PR perspective.
