Hey fellow interns,
I have noticed over the past 10 days of my internship that all our major clients at Spyn Communication are encouraged to engage in social media and set up Twitter and Facebook accounts, to help either spread their message, build brand awareness or grab the attention of key influencers. Social Media has now become the key to success in many organisations.
Social media and public relations have built a relationship with one another, as both work together to communicate to key stakeholders and deliver key messages. PR practitioners are now utilising Social Media as another communication platform. PR no longer has to stick to the traditional press release. Social media has allowed organisations to interact on a personal level with their stakeholders and reach a greater audience. It allows the public to share the organisations message which becomes 'contagious' reaching people from all over the globe, which can allow the business to expand. It also allows the organisation to create relationships which is important in public relations.
Over the last 10 days I have been to many of Nicki's client meetings to see what they discuss and how they come up with ideas. In these meetings they would discuss things such as gaining media attention and public awareness. When attending these meetings I noticed she would mention Facebook and always ask the client if they had a facebook account. She believes this is one way to really communicate to the people, get their attention and get them involved in the businesses ambitions.
One of Nicki's clients is the 'Tickle-Me-Pink' movement, which is a organisation set up to empower, appreciate and pay it forward to people, it also raises breast cancer awareness. Nicki suggested the best way to get the public involved in this movement would be to set up a Facebook account and get people to post and share why they 'Tickle-You-Pink' which, in other words means why they appreciate someone. I thought this was a really good idea and could eventually become a global movement, if the idea spread and everyone started to share why they 'Tickled-You-Pink.' It's catchy, uplifting, fun and allows people to take time out of their busy lives to tell the world why they appreciate someone. People will therefore become interested in the movement and follow the 'Tickle-Me-Pink' organisation.
We also recently met with a two ladies who help run the Zonta House, which is a women's refugee that provides support for women without children through crisis assistance, homeless support, education and outreach programs. It is their 30 year anniversary so we met to discuss the event to celebrate the anniversary and discussed launching a 30 day 'pearl of wisdom' challenge after the event, to spread their message across. Every day on their Facebook page during the 2nd-31st of October Zonta will post a positive quote, which will inspire and empower woman. It was my job to find 30 inspirational quotes to post on their facebook page. This was a really fun task and taught me how Facebook and social media can be used to get the public involved and create personal relationships as these quotes will inspire people during the day and also helps raise awareness about the Zonta house. I am also very excited to be writing the press release for the Zonta House 30th anniversary celebration.
Social media is helping businesses connect and it is our role as PR practitioners to ensure organisations are utilising Social media to their advantage, it is also important we manage the social media accounts to build the organisations reputation.
Good luck with the rest of your intern days!
