Hi everyone,
My name is Meika Glossop and I am in my final semester at Curtin completing a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Tourism, Event Management and Public Relations.
I have just started my internship at SPYN PR with the lovely Nicki Williams. SPYN is a small PR firm
located in Subiaco specialising in Public Relations and Marketing Communications. Nicki is one of their PR consultants who has been apart of the industry for over 20 years. She deals with a number of clients including corporations and non-for-profit charity organisations. Currently Nicki is working with BGC Modular, Construction and Residents, Steve's Hotel, Subiaco Hotel, Pure Bar, ISA group, Tickle-Me-Pink charity organisation, The Nappy Collective charity organisation and Fabulous Lady Wine Society.
My internship journey started back in semester one of my final year. I was doing an assignment for my Event Management Unit and had to meet with an event manager and gain an insight into one of the events they managed. I got in contact with Nicki through family connections, and she helped me with my assignment. After the assignment was completed I asked her if I could start my PR internship with her. She said she was more than happy to take me 'under her wing.'
My first day was very overwhelming as I was literally 'thrown right into the deep end.' Nicki asked me to attend the BGC Modular launch to get an understanding of how events run and what is expected. The Launch was held in Shorehaven in a display home to show residents and special guests the new renovations and there future development plans. The launch included tea and coffee services and special guests speakers. My role during the event was to help set up prior to the event, hand out name tags and meet and greet guests. I really enjoyed the launch as I got to see all the aspects that go into the event process including bump in and out, as well as catering and audio visualisation services.
My next day on interning was where it all started. This was where I really got to see Nicki in action. We started off in her office in Subiaco, from there I was dragged a long to numerous meetings through out the day to meet with clients to discuss PR strategies. the first meeting was at Steve's hotel, which is one of Nicki's main clients. Here we discussed their marketing overview and new strategies to get Steve's hotel more business.
We then travelled to meet up with Nicki's other client, Julie Miller to discuss the Tickle-Me-Pink evening launch. During the meeting Julie gave a brief overview of the event and then discussed PR requirements and ideas for a media plan. I am now currently in the middle of writing up the Tickle-Me-Pink media alert and media release, and I am very excited to attend the launch and see it all come together.
We then travelled back to the SPYN office to brainstorm new ideas and discuss a plan of attack for her clients. I was given then task to send out the Subiaco Hotel press release, which describes the relaunch of the Subiaco Hotel as it has been recently refurbished and renovated. After sending out the press release I was asked to follow up and see whether or not the editors and journalists received the press release and whether or not they were going to cover the story. I found this very daunting and was extremely nervous.
My first day was very overwhelming and I was very nervous but the more I work with Nicki I'm sure i will get the hang of it. I am very excited to see what Nicki has in store for me for the next couple of months. At the moment she has given me the task of doing media alerts and press releases for her clients, and she has said that there will be some very fun and exciting events that I can help her plan and run through out the next few weeks.
I can't wait to share with you some of the amazing experiences I will get to be apart of over the next couple of months, this is such a great learning experience and I am so lucky to be doing it with such an amazing lady who knows all the tips and tricks in the PR profession.
BRING IT ON!
until next time,
Meika
