My Trials and Tribulations of Acquiring an Internship

Hi everyone my name is Kimberley Tait, I will be sharing my 20 day intern experience with you. I am currently in my final year, final semester at Curtin University studying Marketing and Public Relations.

Starting somewhere new is never easy but starting somewhere where you are required to use the skills you have learnt in your three year degree is even more daunting. The type of questions running through my head were things such as; am I good enough? Have I learnt enough at University to apply in the real world? Will they like me? Will I do a good job? What if I don’t do a good job? Will I even find an internship?

These were just some of the burning questions running through my mind when I started the daunting task of trying to find an internship. It was definitely a very scary prospect when emailing different PR consultancies and organisations. I must say I found this a very stressful time, as I entered the unknown and really had no idea what to expect.

To my utter amazement and surprise after a long week of waiting for companies to reply back to me, I somehow was lucky enough to get two interviews. One for Soapbox PR Consultancy and the other for Cancer Support WA.

After going to both interviews I some how managed to score both. As you can probably imagine, I went from being super happy, to ‘crap’ now what. After a couple of days of being utterly confused, I decided why not, it my last semester I will just do both.

So now I intern at Cancer Support WA on Wednesdays and Thursday, Friday I am at Soapbox. I decided this would be a great opportunity to experience two very different oganisations and be able gain invaluable experience from both workplaces.

For the sake of my assignment and the PR internship Unit, I have decided to only register my internship at Soapbox PR Consultancy.

I hope I have made the right decision to do both. I wonder if anyone else has experienced the same problem as me?

I am so excited to start my two internships and can’t wait to utalise the skills I have acquired at University and put them into practice. I am also super excited to wear office clothes and experience what it is like to spend 7 hours sitting in an office.

Xxx

Kimberley
