Applying the Knowledge

As I begin to get into my days at Lotterywest I have found more and more that I am using and applying the knowledge that I had learnt at Curtin. I was completing media releases regularly and was spending a lot of time planning with other team members for social media and public relations campaigns. Let me say that again. A LOT of time.

The research that went into each piece of published writing was intense. I would write a piece for Facebook and then have the Business Statistics team make sure the facts were accurate and then have the Senior Communications Manager read over and make suggested changes. Basically, for even a Facebook post we would spend an hour making sure that it all of the content was accurate and relevant.

My most significant piece of writing to date has been a media release promoting the upcoming Saturday Lotto $21 Million Superdraw.

To create this media release I contacted two retailers who had recently sold a Division 1 winning ticket. We as a team agreed that this was a good idea as it would add a proof for the consumers and also be attractive for media outlets that could potentially pick up the story. We also thought that revealing the lotto ‘hot spots’ would make the story attractive to media outlets as Lotterywest customers are always looking for a way to get that extra little bit of luck.

To cut to the short of it the media release was picked up as a story in the West Australian the next day and there was also a short snippet of vision focusing around the lotto ‘hot spots’ on the Channel 9 news. I found this quite satisfying as a public relations practitioner as it showed me that the work can pay off and result in higher sales, which was the overall goal of the release, as well as be satisfying personally to see the years of learning being turned into real results.

The link for my media release is below if you feel like giving it a read!

Thanks for reading,
Scott

Hi Scott,

I also have been finding some of what I have learnt in class applies to the real world - this is SO encouraging and makes me feel that it's all worth it!

Well done on having your media release about the Mega Draw used by the company - it is indeed so satisfying when your work is sent out. I haven't had a media release yet because unfortunately my internship has become more marketing based - but many of my social media posts for clients have been incorporated into the profiles, and a number of blog posts have been submitted to the client for approval.

This all gives me the hope that if we can succeed at the intern level, we will succeed as a graduate!

All the best - thanks for accepting my LinkedIn connection by the way!

Laura :)
