Hi again,
I am happy to say I was able to stay on for some further work with Mellen Events after the official end of my internship. After studying public relations for three years now, I can see the importance of having sound communication and people skills in this environment. Having the right attitude can really take you places!
I have been able to help out backstage and front of house/ticket managing just before the awful weather has set in (which it has now), and we can still host events in the outdoors. It has been interesting to see what Perth has to offer in the Winter time events wise, as the weather as an unforeseen circumstance really does affect small businesses and the events industry.
Now finishing off the final stages of my report. It has been interesting to take a step back from all the stress of the internship and actively reflect on how public relations was actually used, or not so well used within the organisation. Traditional public relations techniques do not always apply to small special focus business like Mellen Events, but this is mostly due to financial reasons. They take on the mentality that they can "kill two birds with one stone", meaning another department can look after public relations, without having to hire a separate person entirely. I can completely understand why this is the case, and it seems to be the case with many small organisations as I have been reading through this blog thread. Although sometimes I think it comes at some cost, because public relations is then not a priority. It is important to find that balance between the two, where public relations still has an active role, as when done well it can do so much for a company.
Good luck to all over the exam period and to those finishing their degrees!
Billie x
