I have completed two weeks at my internship and it has been a lot of fun in all aspects. There is heaps to work on, hence heaps to learn. Work seems to be fun, probably because all the staff is fun. Apart from the PR point of view, I have learnt a lot just in terms of being a professional.
In the second week of my internship, things got pretty busy. Deadlines were looming on us and everyone worked very hard. The weekend seems even sweeter now that we have worked so hard during the week.
I had to draft two press releases during this week. Both from scratch. And I had to do it in three hours. We usually used to get about three weeks to submit one press release during our good ol' uni days. Now when I think about it, that seems to be a lot of time to submit one press release.
However, that is not how things work in the ''real world''. There is always a close deadline to everything and heaps of editing of the press release. And most important of all, research.
The more you research, the more new things you find to put in your press release. But you cannot put everything that is important! You don't want the release to be too long. And to choose the better between two good things is always difficult.
So the press release writing taught me to research till there's nothing left on google! (that never happens).
There were also hundreds of media lists and trackers to be updated, which took most of the time during the week. It is not the most exciting of the jobs, but it lets you relax your mind if you have been working on something very stressful.
There are also reports to be done for the client after regular intervals. I also had to work on those reports. Reports are a good way to show your client about the progress in their work.
All the clippings and media lists made for so long are all put into a report.
Hence, it is very important not to lose concentration when doing media lists. Although it is a tedious job and it does get boring after a while, it is very important to keep you concentration, as it helps for the report in the end. No one wants to do the whole thing again because something is missing from the tracker.
I hope this will help the interns who are or will commence their internship soon. It definitely did help me a lot.
Until next time,
Saket.
