Trending!

The prevalence of social media in society is way too obvious. Even during my studies, hashtags and social media campaigns are always a part of my PR plans. It has become even more obvious during my internship how important social media is for PR.

Working with the social media analyst at PPR, I have learnt how different clients want different things from social media. Most clients use Facebook and Twitter pages to be promoted and publicised. This week I was asked to research blogs in the building and construction area- something that I didn't even think existed. I found out that there are so many different kinds of building and construction blogs- from Perth mothers blogging about the building of their homes, to well-known companies updating followers with construction and design tips. It was really interesting for me to see a different use to social media, and it reaffirmed my views on its importance in PR.

At PPR I was lucky to sit in on a blogging seminar. It was done over the phone, giving it a real corporate vibe! A lot of information discussed in the seminar made me feel like I was back at university- I guess you can never stop learning about such a developing platform. It also made me happy to have such a high knowledge of social media already. It seems the many classes I have taken surrounding social media are actually worth it. It may be a coincidence, but I feel like there has been a strong emphasis on social media at PPR. Its presence at the moment is omnipotent, and I don't think that is going to change any time soon.

PPR also has an Instagram account that can update you on client events, PPR news and exciting things happening around the office. Run by the employees, it's a little bit of PR they do for themselves!

Hey Megan,
I completely agree with you. We have staff dedicated to media monitoring, and they produce a report to the client each day to update them of what's being said on social media. I guess that goes to show just how social media is dominating today's age.
Like you were saying with clients that want different outcome from social media, I found the same thing , but I also found that some clients only chose to use specific social media platforms to appeal to specific publics. For example some of our clients choose to only use LinkedIn and Twitter opposed to Facebook and Instagram, as they want focus on a more business to business approach rather then to members of the public, whilst others are the opposite and are trying to create publicity through Instagram, Facebook and blogging.
It's really interesting to learn how to use social media to your advantage and keep it creative all the time, and to stay on 'trend'.
Continue to enjoy your social media journey,
Yusra

Hey Megan,

Social media is definitely an essential tool in PR! It is highly interesting, especially when it comes to daily media monitoring, the difference between monitoring for traditional media and social media. Additionally with hashtags, there could be so many variations depending on capitalisation, spacing etc. that sometimes it makes it difficult to keep track of all coverage and impressions garnered.

In your experience, what hashtags are the most popular and gain the most attention? Additionally what do you think makes a good hashtag?

I hope you continue to enjoy and learn through your internship!
