Before my placement I was unsure of which public relations
path to take. Should I look at a position at a busy consultancy, with a variety
of clients? Or should I take the in-house path, focusing on one major company?
I opted to find myself an in-house position for the purposes of my placement. I
wanted to get to know a company and the in’s and out’s of their public
relations policy.
I am really enjoying my time as an in-house public relations
practitioner. I like how I might get to see my company really grow, and that I
have become a part of it. I like that I get to focus all my attention on one
particular goal. I liked that I could really get to know a company.
What I am not enjoying is the repetitiveness that comes with
an in-house role. Sure, there is something new to do everyday but it is not a
very diverse environment. There is also a limit on the amount of creativity
that I can use, especially in maintaining the companies reputation and image.
It is possible that after my experience I have glamorised
the consultancy life – after all I have never lived it. Although I do believe
that there is pro’s and con’s in any path I choose to take. Reading everybody’s
blog contributions has made me excited for the future. I think I am ready to
jump into the ‘real world’!

I feel exactly the same way Cheyenne.
Originally I was strongly against the idea of interning or working for a PR consultancy. I too like focusing all my efforts on on particular goal. Whilst I have enjoyed my time doing in-house PR, given the opportunity, I would love to try a consultancy. I feel that their is a huge opportunity to learn & grow (not saying that I haven't in my current organsiation) in so many different industries.
Thanks for your thoughts!
Simone :)
