Project Thank You – A Gtmedia Initiative

If I was given the opportunity to study one extra unit before I graduate and be able to choose its topic, I would no doubt pick a unit specific to social media to help me curate the perfect content. As we all are aware social media is a wonderful tool to help PR people achieve their clients goals and that is something I have learnt at gtmedia. I have been exposed to social media during my internship when posting content on clients accounts and gtmedia accounts, through social media specific campaigns and through other various ways within our strategies. Most often I am exposed to the tool with the consultancy’s latest initiative called Project Thank You.

During 2014 our director came up with the idea behind Project Thank You as a way to celebrate gratitude and the things in life that we take for granted. The concept is simple we hit the streets and various events, talk to people, ask them what they are thankful for, take a photo of them and post it to the Project Thank You accounts (As long as they are happy for us to do so). Originally Project Thank You was just on Instagram but in the past few weeks we have set some goals and have decided to really push the side project to become something. Therefore we have now expanded to a second channel in order to target more people and launched the Project Thank You Facebook page.

About once a week I will take my turn in approaching people to curate the content seen on the Project Thank You social media. To be honest I find this task quite daunting, people don’t like talking to strangers and the most definitely do not like having a stranger take their photo. Although I love the idea and what we are trying to achieve so therefore I don’t let my nerves of being declined get in the way of turning the initiative into something great. I recently came up with the idea of creating business cards to give to the people we talk to, which was well received in the office and are currently being made. I am hoping this will increase my confidence when approaching people.

However I enjoy the behind the scenes work that I have been involve with within the initiative. In the near future we plan to release a weekly feature article on our Facebook page on interesting and notable Perth people. In the past week I have been scanning social media, the Internet and newspapers to find people appropriate and I have then been writing the interview questions that we will ask to produce the articles.

We have curated content from many interesting people so far on Project Thank You. I love going through previous posts or seeing the content I have not produced and reminding myself of what a privileged and fortunate life I have. It is this that makes me realise what we are doing has the ability to achieve something so simple but still very moving.

If you have the chance visit our instagram (@project_thankyou) or Facebook Project_Thankyou) and stay tuned as great things are coming to Project Thank You!

Thank you for reading, Jodie.

Hi,

Lovely to see you are working with the social media team. I guess we all have, at least once, wished to be in the social media team during our internships. It seems like an amazing and fun part of the work. Since most of us are active on social media, we tend to be pulled towards it.

Anyway, I wish you the best for the future!

Cheers,
Saket.

Hi Jodie

I absolutely love this concept and idea that your boss has come up with! It is something different and gets people thinking about their everyday lives.

I think in every job there is something you don't feel comfortable doing and for you, you said it's approaching people. Over time you will feel more confident and you will end up loving it!

All the best with everything!

Joanna
