Hi all, well i've finally started my placement and i'm working 3 days a week for Starlight. I'm doing a little bit of everything at this placement and i've already learnt so much. I have been doing media releases left, right and center as well as liasing with the media, coordinating and managing events and designing and packing media kits. I am very much enjoying the time at the office as everyone is so nice and wiling to answer any questions that i have as well as helping me adapt to life in an office. There is always something for me to do, i have also helped with a bit of filing and maintenance of databases as well as creating databases.
So far everything has been wonderful and the biggest challenge has been adapting what i have learnt at university to the standards of Starlight, including the layots and what can and can not be said in documentation as well as all the little things like getting the colors excactly right and making sure that the correct letterhead is used.
It has been a very rewarding experience so far and i look forward to completing my placement.

You made a very valid and important point: although you have been studying for years and have written many many media releases and backgrounders, entering a new organisation can be a little bit disheartening when you all of a sudden realise that it may take you a while to adapt to the internal style guide.
Each organisation has a particular style of writing, a suite of colours, guidelines for logo placement, etc. Some may have a written/published Style Guide – others may simply base their style on “this is how we have always done it”. Also, each manager usually has a certain way in which they prefer things to be done. Be prepared for the red pen to come out every time you change jobs – however, don’t be disheartened: you will adapt quickly.
Hi Janna Dilallo, sounds like your internship has lot things to do. And these must be very interesting. I found that I still have to learn many things when we are really in the PR working process. And working experiences teach us more than in the text book.
Your job seems like more on the PR part than me (mine is both PR & Marketing side), I believe you must learn lots of from the internship. Me too, hehehe… PR393 gives us a chance to know about the real life in PR area.
