Hi all!
I hope everyone is settling in fine at their placements so far.
Well, today was my 6th day at the WA Deaf Society. It was yet another busy day from yesterday till today. Yesterday saw me drafting a media release regarding the Society's donations down by 70% which is a follow up media release to the previous release that was sent out last week. The Society is currently reaching out the the public for help for fundraising in order to sustain its current services for the Deaf and hard of hearing people. Also, I was given the task of re-designing a brochure for the upcoming Lecture Series on Mental Health which will be illustrated through three workshops. Currently waiting for the confirmation of workshop dates and time before I can finalise the layout. One challenge I faced was using Publisher. Well, during the units we undertook at uni, I used Adobe InDesign as I was much more familiar with it but at work, the computer I was using didn't have that software. So well, I had to try my hands on Publisher but thankfully by the end of the day, I still managed to operate it and churn out a design! It was really tough in the beginning since the tools and shortcuts were very different. I still prefer Adobe InDesign due to the designing tools available but I suppose we all have to adapt to environment when we have to.
Today I spent the earlier part of the morning sending out the Media Release and did follow up calls to ensure that the media outlets has received my fax and asked if they had any queries regarding the issues and if possible, were there any possible media angle they would like us to tell them about. After the many phone calls, some were inclined towards our story and may publish a short write up within the next two weeks.
Also, I drafted another Media Release regarding the Society's Introduction Course to the Deaf Community and Its Language. I guess that will be finalise by next week when I head to work again.
It has been a wonderful work experience so far and I feel that I've learnt quite a handful of useful skills that I can bring with me upon graduation.
Till then, I look forward in following your journey through this blog.
