Hi Everyone.
My name's Jade and I am currently working full time for an advertising agency. Bell Booth Advertising and Marketing (BBAM as it is referred to) is the agency I work for and have decided to do my placement with also. As my role is quite advertising and marketing based I am going to focus on aspects that relate to PR in my posts.
Within my first week at the agency, I learnt so much. One thing that I still think is the most crucial is the amount of contacts you gain when working in the media industry. My role at the agency is a quarter reception-based so one of my duties in answering the phones. The same clients and media call weekly so you begin to know who they are and what they do. Quite often, these people come into the agency for meetings etc. so you can put a face to the name. Within a week, you become so used to all these people and you can ask them for favours, price deals or anything basically! They get their business from you so their more than happy to help. I was not aware of how much communication with so many different people is required when working in a consultancy, but now I do, I quite enjoy it. Now I understand why you definitely have to be a people person to work in PR. The industry is definitely more about who you know. I now underdstand why networking is so crucial for success in this type of industry.
Welcome to PR Internship - YOUR opportunity to put everything you have learned over the past years at university into practice and to get a thorough insight into what public relations is like "in the real world". This Blog allows you to reflect on your experiences, share insights with other students across campuses and to possibly give advice and support to fellow students. It's great that you get to meet people and practise your people skills. I'm stuck in my cubicle with written work most of the time and I wish I had a chance to meet and talk to more people.
