Fast Paced PR

I know in university we are all taught that in the public relations field you have to be constantly up to date and on top of what is currently happening in local, national and international news, fashion, fads and entertainment. This keeps us as professionals current so we are able to communicate to our stakeholders in the most effective way we can. Despite knowing this, getting into the work force and keeping current can be both a daunting and overwhelming task. I thought that by reading the newspaper once a week, watching the news as much as I can and reading magazines to keep up with current fashion would put me in a good position within my current placement. What I did not realize was that there are so many more aspects of society that are constantly changing that you need to be up to date with.

One of my definite weaknesses in my placement was being asked on several occasions to source current music that was not yet too commercial but still up and coming for some of the fashion shows and competitions that we where going to hold. Now as much as I enjoy music, I am not the person who knows who sings a song, let alone a remix. Nor do I even know where to find such where the up and coming music hides. I found these tasks some of the most difficult as I felt incredibly clues and uncool not knowing what to do, and when I found some music not knowing if it was good enough or would suit. I hope that situations like this will come easier with time and experience, as well as hard work trying to keep not just on top of, but in front of the news, current trends and opportunities.    

Has anyone else had similar difficult tasks? or felt the pressure of such a fast paced industry?
