My time at SIDS and Kids WA is officially coming to an end… And it’s really sad. I still have two official days left for my placement, and I don’t want it to end! I feel like I am learning so much, and gaining so much! I am, however, planning on continuing to volunteer in the same role with them for as long as I can!
But today’s blog is a general one- the, “I really am VERY worried about finding a job when I graduate” one.
Does anyone else feel like this?
When this semester first started, I wasn’t too worried about finding a real job. I listened to all the teachers who were saying “people are hiring, it is just not advertised”. But now, I’m panicking!
With just less than a month before I finish my degree (fingers crossed!), it just gets a little disheartening when you speak to people within the industry who say, “Well, no one is really hiring at the moment” !!!!
Good luck to everyone who is graduating this semester- it will be hard for all of us to find places within the industry at the moment, and we ALL deserve them.

Glad to hear your placement has gone so well!
As for finding a job. I think everyone is a little nervous with the economy in its' current state.
You said that you were planning on continuing in your current role as a volunteer...thats great! If you were planning on applying for a job through one of the many graduate programs (they usually hire for January/February 2010)you could potentially have 7+ months experience in a PR role (assuming you stay with SIDS untill the end of the year)before your hired. I personally think that would be a huge advantage over many other graduates!
It might also give you some piece of mind to remember that continuing your work with SIDS could quite possibly open up many more opportunities (your obviously a hard worker and I'm sure they value you) - Remeber, it's all about networking these days!

your concerns are really valid. I am finishing my degree at the end of the year and I cant begin to tell you how many times ive thought about graduating and being jobless next yr.
I do however feel like this unit creates many opportunities even if its volunteer work. To have a reference of work experience when graduating is something I am aware that employers look for!
Glad to hear you enjoyed your placement, theres nothing like a positive experience to inspire and motivate you to get the job in your desired field.

I am worried, but at this point crazy busy with the workload at uni, so I don't have too much time to be stressed! I'm sure it will out though...
The decision to continue on for me was an easy choice- I can help out an organisation that I love AND I can gain extra experience to put on my resume.

I do feel the same. Next year, i will be graduated and worried for the same matter arousing here. It seems like this is not the right time for us to graduate due to the economic downturns.
All the industries are having retrenchment to cut down the cost. I wonder where is the place for us as fresh graduates?
Anyway, life still goes on and we need to think positively. There is always a sun ray in the dark cloud. So, lets work out the best

It’s good to hear that you are doing well in your placement and happy to work there. I'm in the same position as you. I'm quite nervous and I do not know what to do after graduating. One advice which my supervisor gave me was that you have to stay focused in what you do and give it your best shot. It all comes down to how much effort you put in to finding a job. And once you have found the job that you wanted, you will need to do a research on the background of the industry, as well as the company. With this knowledge, you will be able to do the interview much better and the chance of you being accepted will be much higher. By the way, have you asked your supervisor if you are able to be officially employed there? I think that if the supervisor sees a potential in you, the chances of them hiring you as an employee will be much higher.
