Hi Every one.
Well I have started my placement at the start of the holidays and will be continuing until September. I am working for Myer in the public relation and events department. The last couple of weeks have been such a learning curve. I have learnt that public relations and events in the fashion industry are definitely not as glamorous as many think.... It is allot of hard work! For example I spent an entire day taping the bottom of models shoes so they would not slip on the cat walk! Not the most glamorous of jobs, but unfortunately part of setting up a fashion show.
The work that goes into even a small event is phenomenal and it is great to be involved from the start to finish.
So far I have helped with media releases, updated media lists, helped set up for a event and packed down for an event. The highlight to date, would definately be attending the Fashion Festival program launch, where my supervisor introduced me to many public relations heavy weights of Perth not to mention many of the media. My supervisor has reiterated many times that networking is one of the most important aspects of Public Relations, this was definitely echoed by many of the public relations professionals I met. I am extremely lucky to have a supervisor who absolutely loves her job and wants to pass on as much knowledge as possible.
Something that I am extremely excited and slightly terrified about is that my supervisor has given me an entire event to organise for the up and coming Fashion Festival. Myself and another placement girl are in charge of organising every aspect of this event, from the sound equipment, to the graphics on the flyer's, caterers and the VIP list. This will be such a huge learning experience so I'm really excited about it.
So far so good, I will keep every one updated.

Hi Coby
How exciting! Your work placement sounds really fun and the networking you are enabled to do in that type of surrounding is enviable.
Do you see yourself working with Myer after the work placement finishes?
hi Ashlyn
Yes my prac is very interesting hard work at the moment but such a good learning experience. Unfortunately there is only one person at Myer doing PR and thats my supervisor she has requested to have another full time person but has had this request denied many times.
Hi,
Sounds like you having a lot of fun in your work placement. Most important, are you enthusiastic in fashion too? If really it is, I believe there will be plenty of great work from you.
Keep it up!
Regards,
Christy
Hi Coby! Sounds like you are having a great working in Myer! Are you still working there? After reading your post, I am curious to know how you managed the event for the Fashion Festival. How did it turn out? =D
Wow, I guess you can say there's nothing like throwing you's into the deep end!!!
Though I have to comment, while reading your blog I was sitting here saying to myself 'me too'. I have also taped the bottom of models shoes and come to realise just how much goes into organising an event.
The hours are long and not to be desired.
I hope your event sailed smoothly
Goodluck
Hello,
You seem to be having a good time during your internship. It sounds really exciting with you involved in the planning of the event. I was involved in my company's own event too and it was a fun experience although i was not given the opportunity to draw up the VIP list. The day's running up to the event itself tend to be the most busiest but when you're done with it then its really really satisfying.
Hope you have a blast!
