I was surprised the other day when my supervisor was asking if i new any media deadlines, after three years studying PR, which is in the most part working with the media I did not know a single media deadline. How many of us know about each media outlets deadlines?
My supervisor assured me that many graduates don't know and was concerned that we were not being taught one of the most important things. All though it seemed like a small thing, she said Perth is extremely small and many editors give new comers only a few chances to get it right, especially some of the big editors. I have come across a few things that I have thought were not important but are apparently vital for first impressions and building relationships with the media. Every week it has become more and more apparent how small Perth media is and how much every one shares, it's definitely not as hostile as I thought.

I guess its the one thing that you'll only realize when you're really out there and working/doing placements like us at the moment.
Deadlines are very random, some publications outlets want it a week before and some spreads out to even a month! Well of course you have those that are lenient and the deadlines are even negotiable... It depends for which country though so the cultural context may be taken into consideration here.

am sure your supervisor is quite right that some graduates dnt know about the media deadlines and am sure those are the students who have not taken journalism in thier Mass communication modules.I was very fortunate to learn in my earlier journalism modules that media deadline is VERY essential and i remember my lecturer telling us that its one of the most important if not the only aspect that makes a journalist reliable.Meeting deadlines is always difficult and time consuming but am sure every proffesion has a deadline aspect and in the busy world of journalism,media deadline is the MOST important and every journalists' nightmare is to miss his/her deadline.so good point Coby and i remember having a bit of difficulties meeting my deadline at my placement in the first week.Am glad am done and i did meet my deadlines..Cheers mate.
