I started work experience at Artsource last week and it’s quite daunting. I have been given my own projects to complete over the next 3 months, with a mention that there may be a contract up for grabs at the end of the placement.
Reality has hit me - “You better remember everything you’ve learnt in the last 4 years if you don’t want this to turn into a kamikaze mission.” I’m happy where I am, with my foot in the door of the art industry, but it’s a lot different to what we were taught in class. I think this is because art journalism is different from regular journalism, especially in a city where art is disregarded as a part of the entertainment sector and not rightfully recognised as art.
Newsworthy angles and hooks are easy to find for the artists and the residencies/projects that are happening in Perth but it’s hard to get the spotlight onto the company Artsource, which is seen as a mediator and not especially interesting. The challenge is to raise the profile of Artsource to be recognised by the general public, as the organisation is already very well known amongst the art community. Whether this can happen now or when the perception of art and the art industry in this state changes, is something I have wondered…
The team is amazing and friendly and very helpful, I think the marketing and communications manager is thankful she has some help.
By for now… wish me luck in remembering all my classroom skills!
Martine
