Starting Work Experience

I started my work experience a little while ago and to tell you the truth I was extremely scared to go out into the work force. When your at university the real world seems really different and you feel as though your always going to be at uni :). So to actually go into a business and complete and contribute to 'real work' was a little daunting.

For myself it was difficult to get work experience. I think this was mainly due to me wanting to go somewhere and not really considering other oppurtunities. If I could go back to last semester (when I was supposed to complete this unit) then I would have tried a few different places rather then the area I wanted to go into. Although in saying that I think you should complete your work experience at a placement you would like to work at when you graduate. This gives you the insight into the industry and you can make your mind up before you leave whether that area of public relations is the area you want to work in.

My work experience is at Amplifier Capitol. The majority of you have probably heard of this company but for those of you that havent it is a live venue situated in the CBD. Theyare well known for having big name live acts and are one of the busiest nightclubs in Perth. Originally I contacted the promoter of the venue Jeff. He works for the business but also has his own company and they run events such as Rollercoaster. This is the area I want to get into events preferably with either the music or sport industry. So this would be perfect for me I thought.

A lot of work goes in behind the scenes at a place like this and unless you have actually seen it you wouldnt know it. There is also a number of people who work here full time.

My first day was kind of a trial run I was not guaranteed the full 20 days as they didnt know what I would be like and the owner was away at the time. They wanted to put it past him whether or not they wanted to have someone completing work experience here. I recieved a tour of the venue/offices/band rooms etc and was introduced to everyone. I like everyone that works here and the atmosphere is laidback so it was easier for me to fit in.

I was then asked by Jeff to complete a press release for a band that were playing at the venue. This press release was to go out to the media contacts that the venue has such as XPress, Drum Media etc. I was suprised that they would giuve me something like this but I later found out that it was also kind of a test for me to see if I could actually write. Even though you have completed so many years at uni, in the workforce your skills may not be up to scratch.

After this first day I felt like I was really going to enjoy my time at Amplifier Capitol.

Hi Nicole,

I was in the same situation as you when I was looking for organisations to complete my placement. I was hoping to work at a large government organisation such as Lotterywest or the Water Corporation. I spoke to so many people and thought I had found a position each time only to be let down and told that they could not cater to my needs. Eventually I found LunchBox List and while it was not my first choice I am glad to have had the opportunity and I really enjoyed it. I guess it is something that we can suggest to future PR393 students. Start contacting people early to secure your placement!!

It is often hard to fit in at any organisation as a uni student. I was fortunate to have been part of a small team and it was easier to develop relationships with the otehr employees. Often I wonder about what I have missied out on not working in a larger company but at the end of the day it sounds like we have both enjoyed our placements and learnt alot.

Congratulations Nicole. We have finally graduated!!!
