One major event that I helped create was the MASTERPIECE project. Masterpiece is a digital art competition – in fact, Maldives first digital art competition - designed to promote and appreciate the talent of gifted Maldivian digital artists. The project’s aim is to create more awareness about digital art and encourage digital artists to continue to be energised and continue in their creative work. It is designed to run as a series throughout the 5 years of the Faraway strategic plan. The first theme that we designed is titled MAGICAL MALDIVIAN MOMENTS – capturing the essence of what is truly Maldivian.
Prior to the official launch (it happened recently on the 1st of October and will run till midnight Sunday 1st November 2009), we designed the Rules of the Competition and defined what exactly is Digital Art. We came up with the definition: “Digital art is any piece of artwork created on a computer in digital form”. We also created the rules for submission and the format to be submitted. The theme of Magical Maldivian Moments is to be judged according to originality and the artist’s creativity.
The first prize was to be Rufiyaa 10,000 which is about AUD 1000. Second prize Rufiyaa 7000 and third prize Rufiyaa 3000. A special prize is also allocated to the “Most popular artwork” and attracts a prize of Rufiyaa 5000. All prize winning art will be presented at an expo and exhibition open to the general public.
Before we launched the event, we first went about securing sponsors. Maldives’ biggest tourism company Universal Enterprises, its main telecommunications company Dhiraagu and Maldives national airline Maldivian were our main sponsors and will be provided with an array of advertising opportunities through Faraway FM.
Judging will be done by a panel consisting of prominent Maldivian artists.
The official launching ceremony was inaugurated by the Chairman of the Maldives National Broadcasting Company (MNBC) at a cool Italian restaurant in Maldives called Aoali. The event was covered by Television Maldives news giving the competition national exposure. I wish I was there but I am told it turned out to be colourful event. Winners of a previous Faraway music competition called FARAWAY UNPLUGGED performed throughout the three course dinner.
