I can safely say that this placement opportunity has enabled me to improve my time management skills immensley.
After working on the MYM Fashion Show during Perth Fashion Week, I feel I have learnt the importance of client relations and time management when organising an event.
I have also learnt the importance of creating media releases that are consise and news worthy, otherwise I have found that your work will not be reported on and thus means no promotion and coverage on the events your company is organising.
I am suprised at how often I had to look back on previous work I had done, in my PR units and I have often found myself looking through text books from first year in an attempt to refresh my memory.
This really is a unit that not only tests your skills, but forces you to re-fresh those skills and work on them.
At the beginning of this unit, I was scared that I was too in-experienced to do a placement unit. However, I have found that over time I have become more confident in my skills and I have become more organised.
This unit is great for preparing you for the outside world and although it won't be easy, at least I can be a little bit more confident than before.

I too finished my work placement feeling very appreciative of having learnt all i can about the public relations industry beforehand. In high school year 12 I remember doing work experience as a component of a humanities unit. It was at an organisation called the Bibbulmun Track Foundation. Anyway the school sent us all out to do work experience without teaching us the necessary skills or what to expect in a working environment. Even though I liked the organisation and everyone I worked with, I absolutely hated the experience. The work was boring and monotonous. I came home everyday exhausted and emotionally drained. When I got to uni I found out I had to do work experience at the end of my PR units. Needless to say I was horrified. But when I did work experience this time at a radio station I enjoyed it a whole lot more and ended up working even more hours three weeks in a row.
Hi helina,
I completely agree with your first comment, and I could relate to a few things you said.
I have never been very good at time management. Even though I should have developed better skills during my time at Curtin in managing my time more effectively, I still find that its something I struggle on.
Within my work placement opportunity, I definitely felt like I was forced to address my time management issues, because I had to! Being under someone else’s directions, meant that I had no other choice but to really use my time properly to get tasks done properly and on time. The initial intimidation of being in an unknown environment and in the ‘real working world’ left me really having to re-assess what I needed to do to manage my time and not let other co-workers down.
I realized that most people in the office had their own strategies and tricks to managing their time properly, and I did learn a lot from the girls around me that had been working in this environment for a while. A lot of time and effort had to be allocated to ‘outside office hours’ to properly get things done, and make sure that the time spent in the office was organized and well used.
I feel that I am more confident in managing my time, and I think the thing that worked best for me was to made a day/week plan with specific times of when tasks need to be done.
I also agree with the fact that looking back on old text books and notes actually came in very handy. There was a few nights that I had a flick through some of my old PR text books (even from first and second year) and found that a lot of the information, even though it was basic, really did help in reinforcing what was going on within my placement. I am not glad I did keep some of my books as I think that they serve as a good reference, especially when new to a workplace
