Ho Ho Ho Bye 2009, Welcome 2010

My colleague and I were assigned to organise the Christmas barbecue, which was held on the 23rd of December. We divided our tasks between us; I was put in charge of the music. We both prepared games for the guests – among them were decorating the Christmas tree… We were running out of time to conduct two other games which we intended to do for that day – Freeze Dance and Guess the Song. We did confirmation calling to the guests.

On the day of the event, we had to prepare the food at one of our colleagues’ house. We set the tables at the poolside. I was at the registration desk. Guests were told to bring a gift each so that towards the end of the barbecue, Santa would exchange gifts between us and we would have one of our own. :P

THERE. WAS. SO. MUCH. OF. FOOD.

A lot of it was wasted as well. >_> We had to clean the place up, we had to arrange the decorations and put everything back in place, and we did a great deal of washing. By the time I reached home, it was 1 a.m. on 24th December. And there was work the next day.

I met many guests, among them, clients of the company, friends, friends of friends, and we all took the opportunity to mingle around. One of the clients brought two massage therapists from his own spa, and all of us there got a chance to get a massage… which was so relaxing. And for all the things we did prior to the barbecue, it was a much needed one. :P

After Christmas, I was given another task – to review the website of Esente Communications. I needed to do research on other PR websites to see what ideas we could take in for the remodelling of the site. Some suggestions given were valid, and were mainly concentrated around the design issue. Here’s hoping to see these changes put in place when the site comes online once again…

I still had my media monitoring to do every morning, and I still had to search for news regarding what our organisation does, our rapport with clients. I was also assigned to go to the Tax Department to pay the taxes for the year and to get another form for the coming year. I was very new to the place, but the beauty of it was that I didn’t get lost. My research is also ongoing.

When you live and breathe in the world of public relations, it isn’t entirely a breeze.

For example, you have the impression that someone’s encroaching into your work when you need your private space so badly. You get rather ticked off by people who think they’re all that, when in actual fact, they’re not. You deal with hierarchy, which is indeed drawn in many companies with THICK, GLARING LINES, be it in a small firm or otherwise. And you can’t possibly have the feeling of confidence that things are going to be alright when there are people sweet-talking their way into the work lives of their colleagues. It has been mentioned, time and again, that human evaluation is corrupted by a web of lies and lust. The human condition is such that no matter how much you idealise your work life, it always turns out to be a load of bull crap. Yet, with all this, your ultimate goal is to give the best impression possible to your clients, to those who are dealing with you.

And I’m not Superwoman.
Mesdames, Mesdemoiselles, Messieurs, welcome to the working world.

But enough of my emotion-fuelled rant, especially at this time of the year.

To all readers, I wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2010. Let’s hope that it isn’t going to be a simple change of numbers!
