2010

Happy New Year
and all that. It’s the second week of the year and my fifth week in Esente Communications. Here I was hoping that the New Year 2010 would be ushered in with something special for us and for me in relation to the working environment, but no – the workload of the first week was already a burden for me to bear. As usual, I do media monitoring, research and some administrative work here and there, not forgetting the media calls.

I don’t know why, but this wasn’t the field of PR that I was acquainted with. I had my impressions, I had my expectations. Back in university we had constant guidance; no one ever left us alone, even if we had done things the wrong way. And we still learned to do it the right way, we were given precise explanations. The working world, on the other hand, is a dog-eat-dog world. People are ready to justify themselves and deny their liability because they have been there for a long time, before we interns ever came in. Miscommunication abounds, and if you lack the alertness and the ability to cope with working life, the blame will be put on you. And for all this, they call it public relations for Pete’s sake.

Nobody is perfect
, no one will ever be. As interns, we’re here to learn and we make a lot of mistakes (aren’t we all meant to do so?). This is our first working environment and from what I’ve heard and been told, there will be a lot of guidance, support, fun. Pfffffffff, I don’t see it.

Hi Narin

I think organisations and employees themselves will always differ. Sad to hear u say you havnt seen all the guidance, support and fun. Well, where i interned, they would never throw anything my way without a coherent way of doing things. This made me feel comfortable and able to do my work at well with ease. Dnt worry much though, i would encourage that you keep working hard and dnt let such get to you. You are there for the much needed experience..........good luck.

Hi Narin, sad to hear that you didn’t enjoy your internship as much as you had thought you would and sorry for them that being a communication organization they definitely need guidance in how to communicate themselves. Internal communications are of vital importance in an organization.

Where I interned, we had team meeting at least once a week. And of course, I was always invited. In the meeting, we informed each other of what we had been doing and would be doing. We brought up anything interesting or worth of sharing happened recently, either internally or around the globe. The manager always kept everyone well-informed of the operational and strategic directions.
My workload was mainly consisted of writing and research. I wrote feature articles for e-Newsletter, congratulations letters for awards winners, post-event report for internal management, etc. and also did research into our target audience, social media, etc. I believe they were very PR-related. I was very excited when every time new assignments came to my desk. And the staff were all aware of that hence gave me more opportunities to practice. They were always ready to offer me guidance, help and praise. Work environment was so professional and family-like that I felt much attached to the place. That’s how it should be, wasn’t it?
