Today my work experience mentor presented me with the question: How important do I feel that Core Values and Mission and Vision Statements are to the overall activities of a company?
I responded by saying that I felt that, from a PR point of view, when implemented correctly, all of the above can be beneficial for the company. However, we agreed that many companies fail to adhere to the values and statements they have set out, and therefore these companies fail to provide their employees with appropriate and consistent direction.
As the company with which I am doing my work experience is brand new, my mentor Michelle has asked for my assistance in creating an appropriate set of statements for the company. Today we focussed on putting together a list of values that we felt were the most important. In particular, we felt that "leading by example" would be a primary goal as we have both worked in companies that have failed to adequately do this, which usually results in a general state of discontentment amongst the employees, especially in our previous hospitality roles!
Has anyone found that their company places an adequate amount of importance on their Core Values and Mission and Vision statements? Has anyone noticed that their company doesn't? Which ones do you feel are most important?

Hi Samantha!
I'm Shehzana from Charles Telfair Institute (Mauritius Campus). I'm doing my internship at AfrAsia Bank Ltd which focus on corporate and institutional banking, wealth management, private and partnership banking.
I noticed that the organisation I'm working for does place an adequate amount of importance on their core values and mission statement. In fact their mission statement is:
"AfrAsia will be the reference point for Corporate, Wealth Management and Partnership Banking solutions linking Mauritius and the Africa‐Asia trade corridor. We will be recognized as passionate partners with a disruptive approach, a can do attitude and working as a genuine team."
I believe the mission statement encompasses the core values of the bank itself which in turn defines
- What the business organisation is in
- Its beliefs about how business should be conducted
- The publics/stakeholders it serves
- The unique value it contributes to society at large
In fact the bank also produce a corporate video clip some weeks ago, the team of Hello News TV was there, and I had the chance to see it live and later view the clip which was actually a good one. Again, the core values were indeed taken into consideration to showcase the who the bank is and what it does.
Hi samantha,
I think drafting a set of core values and mission statements is a really exciting step in any organisation. It must be hard but fun!
By the way, I am Tavinia from Charles Telfair Institute (Mauritius) and I am doing my internship at Four Seasons Resort where they really stress on the importance of living up to their core values and principles.
The objective of the Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts is:
"To be recognised as the company that manages the finest hotels, resorts and residence clubs wherever we locate".
Since it is a multinational group, they have a set of core values that transcends geographical barriers.
Their golden rule is " Treat others as you would like to be treated" and this is reflected in all the endeavours be it with their internal publics or their guests.
For the internal public they actually organise activities to make the employees feel valued such as monthly best employees awards, monthly birthday parties and they have an open door policy that is in line with their corporate values.
Their corporate values includes supporting sustainability and the resort infrastructure and management is based on this. In Mauritius, the Four Seasons resort strives to be in harmony with nature and they even put in place a love forest as part of their CSR program. Couples who get married at the Four Seasons Resort plan a tree that is endemic to the island on a plot of land kept for this program. I think it combines nicely authenticity and sustainability.
Another thing that came as a surprise was the glitch report they have on their internal network. Anyone having a problem with a guest actually inputs the information on the server for everyone to be aware and for the management to react promptly.
They also have the "show me you know me" to enhance the sense of personal touch they strive to give in everything they do.
This is the first time I came across an organisation that puts so much effort in meeting their goals but i certainly hope it will not be the last! Mission statements and core values are here for a reason; to help the organisation keep its focus to enable it to achieve its goal.
All the best for the semester!
Cheers
Tavinia
