By working with a non-profit organization, I realized that there is a huge difference compared to working for an organization. This can be seen in terms of funds, staffs and also management. Due to the lack of staffs and mainly the lack of funding, non-profit organizations have to work extra hard especially the ones that are for animal welfare such as SPCA Selangor.
NGO such as SPCA, relies highly on public support and sponsors. For every event that they do, there are always sponsors and animal lover supporters who help out in many different aspects. Whether it is in funding or volunteering. During the SPCA Gala Dinner 2010 which was recently held in Shang Ri-La Hotel, many people came and volunteered to help out with the event. The event was a fund raising event for the expansion of the shelter into a new eco SPCA shelter. I was part of the management crew for the event which was basically all of us staffs in the marketing communications department.
There are only a few members of staff in the Marketing and Communications Department, including the inspectors. The pre-production for this event was intense as we did everything from packing the goody bags to moving and carrying the things to the venue. As there are no human resource section in SPCA. Plus during the that night of the event there was only three of us managing the whole thing. All three of us had to look after the registration desk, the merchandise booth as well as make sure that all the guest are happy and that there weren't any problems. However thankfully there were volunteers who were nice enough to even skip their dinner inside to help us out outside.
The event that night was a success as they were many people who attended as well as donated. :-) After that night I realized that there are actually many people out there who cares about animals and who are compassionate animal lovers.
I have learned so much from being apart of this event as like what I said before, due to the shortage of people I got the chance to do many things that I thought I wouldn't be able to do before my internship. Even though I was just an intern but all of my co-workers still treated me like I was apart of the group. I really appreciated them for that. :-)
I feel that there is more unity among staff members in non-profit organizations and the employees do not actually treat you like an intern. I don't know if everyone else feels the same or not. But then again maybe it's just me. :-)
Heng Fong :-)
