Creative Vs. Organised.

I am now eight days into my placement and the ball I have been working towards is tomorrow! The biggest thing I have noticed while observing the event managers put this event together, is how amazing their creative vision is and but how their organisation skills need some work. I have been in the office three days this week, and every day I have spent at least two thirds of my time on the road. I have been picking up props and costumes, getting masks made, picking up dresses for hostesses and even trying to find earrings for the director. This is all fine, I understand this is the role of PR graduates in the work place- we are the errand runners. However for me to be doing this the day before the event is a little scary. We also did not have a timed run sheet until another consultant in the office stepped in and wrote one, and we had our first and last staff brief yesterday. It was very clear that only the two event managers understood the way the ball was going to work, the rest of us were quite confused.
On the other hand however, despite this lack of organisation the creative vision behind the ball is absolutely amazing! Today I was going through the tech stuff and the run sheet and I finally saw how everything fell into place. Everything from the bar staff to the room scent, to the host, to the band and to the tech displays fits in perfectly and creates an amazing, very original theme for the night. Now I've been sworn to secrecy so I can't write about the details of the theme until after the ball, but they are incredible.
The situation has made me think about whether, in PR and events management, is it better to be creative or organised or can someone be a perfect balance of both?
As can be seen in my situation, if it is only a creative person behind it there are things that are forgotten or left to late to organise risking the quality of the event (this hasn't happened with this ball luckily!). However if the person is more organised than creative, will the event lack the pizzazz it needs to stand out in the PR world. I think it does also come down to what the event is for. This ball in particular is for media and advertising people, so it has to be creative, different, and packed with pizzazz (my new favourite word =P). However if it was a government lunch, it would need to be dignified, classy and organised.
What I think would be best, would be to make sure there is a creative person designing the event but a very well organised person helping them put it together.
Stay tuned for my post after the ball, it is going to be the best learning experience I could have wanted! Hope all your placements are going well.
