I started my placement working 2 days a week during January. During February one of my colleagues resigned and I was asked to take on his role as well as my own. This has taken me to a a full time workload where all members of the company are required to work a 12 hour day 5 days a week. This will increase to 7 days a week on 24 hour call from April 1st (one month from event). To be honest these hours were definitely daunting and extremely tiring to start with. It took me 2-3 weeks before I was used to both the workload and the idea of it. I always understood that the events industry was a lot of work, however I definitely underestimated the reality of it. Did anyone else underestimate or perhaps overestimate their placement?
Regardless of the workload or the hours; I am learning so much and gaining invaluable experience every day. I am thoroughly enjoying my placement and the work that I am doing within it. My placement is definitely showing me the truth to the event industry and to myself.

I totally agree with you Jane. Passion IS a must in the events industry. I am currently employed in events, I haven't even held any events yet and already I am feeling the pressure to put in a lot more hours closer to the time of the event, and on the actual day(s).
To make matters worse, I am going overseas and arriving three weeks before the first major event that will set the standards for the other five events thoughout this year. So yes, pressure is definately on!!
I knew that it was going to be hard work and more hours than what I agreed to do when I signed up for the job, and that's the workload I expected.
The reality is it takes a certain person to work in events management and its not just the demanding workload. You also have to have excellent organisational skills, be able to prioritise tasks effectively, work under huge amounts of stress and communicate with a variety of people, and find the balance in your own life at the same time.
There's usually only a small window of opportunity to make the most in events management. So I decided to take this opportunity now while I am still young, can enjoy the most of it and learn as much as I can!! (Because I doubt I will continue events management for the rest of my life!).
I am glad you are gaining experience and learning a lot from your placement's industry.

the pressure of events management is very huge undoubtedly. But the most important things is that you learn a lot during those tough times. I was working with the my unit colleagues the other day and I had to wake up very early in the morning for we had to rehearse the event of the day which was a fashion show at Bangasar mall in Kualur Lumpur.
internal communications and clear time frame are two most crucial aspects in events management. if you lack any of the two the event itself may flop. I like events because they can proof how skillful you are and also show your weakness of which I believe you can improve on them. But if there is anything that I like about event management is to see the event that I planned going smoothly.
