PUBLIC RELATIONS REQUIRES PATIENCE

Many are times the phrase "patience is a virtue" is thrown around loosely without its exact meaning being fully implemented. During the first week of my internship i realized that patience is a must have quality for every practitioner.

You see we are dealing with different key public's whose personalities differ form one person to the next. And at the end of the day another phrase comes into play "the customer is always right". On my first day at the office, we were in the thick and thin of things organizing a student art exhibition as well as the arrival of ,miss Botswana. As i was calling the media i realized how "loose" their communication skills were. Some lacked the professional capability of addressing a "potential customer" after all i was providing them with news.

Sometimes you find your patience wearing thin, with all the transferring from one extension to another, the rude language, the holding. But always one has to keep their mind on the prize. because in the end you have to benefit from that long and annoying phone call. when sending media invites you have to go all the way, send fax, email and then call. Some would even claim not to have seen the invite and then you have to go through the process.

However you realize that with the sometimes strainers process, the end result is always something you can be proud of....so my fellow pr aspirants lets learn to exercise a little patience, you be well rewarded!

With that welcome to my first post.

hi! mr

yeh! it is true patience is a virtue. But sometimes if you become too patient with this people you wont be able to meet you deadlines.

i have had the experience before, whereby we were organizing some event at my organization.we had approached this company to design posters for us, and they kept on telling us to be patient when we did follow-ups on them and only to find ourselves in a situation whereby posters were not designed the day before the event.

But you are right if you are the beggar you have to be patient and you will get something in the end. But i prefer to look for another initiative rather than just wait if things are not working out.

not just anyone said...

I know exactly what you mean.

In my case we were just inviting people to a dinner. They wouldn't reply, then when we would call they would say they didn't get it or they never looked at it and would you mind sending it again.

Most of the time you go through this process 2-3 times with about 50% of the list.

So patience really is a virtue. The thing I keep in mind is that these people have lives too, and their life does not revolve around my schedule, as much as I would like it too. It is easy to lose things or read emails and forget about them when you get 100's in a day.

I think it is important to always give people the benefit of the doubt, but don't be afraid to follow up something if you haven't heard back, most of the time it is because they really did forget.
