In today’s Web 2.0, traditional techniques of communication won’t reach your audiences, however online tools such as social networks, blogs, online newsrooms, podcasts, RSS are changing the face of PR in terms of online presence.
This was my last project at the bank – developing a social media strategic plan (LinkedIn, Facebook and Google Adwords) with new strategies and tactics to increase the visibility of the bank and promoting these networks as an advertising platform. I was also asked to find some 50 potential names for the corporate blog enhancement project. Recommendations, evaluation and the budget analysis were also included in the social media plan.
To start with, this demanded much research to find the accurate information and all in order to draft the social media report. Since I was already familiar to Facebook it wasn’t that hard to understand the network; I devoted more time to LinkedIn and Google Adwords. Again, research was the main issue and from there understanding how LinkedIn, Facebook and Google Adwords can be used as advertising platforms. I also got to learn a lot about the pay per click and the pay per impression options. To work out the budget analysis, I called FRCI, which provides information technology services and training for enterprises in Mauritius, both regionally and internationally. Since I knew my internship would be over soon and I would not have time to implement the plan, and the bank decided to seek the help of FRCI in doing so, I called them to know about their fees for the implementation and all. As regards to the daily budget for Facebook, LinkedIn and Google, my supervisor and myself decided on it and estimated a cost for a particular time frame.
The bank was very interested in the LinkedIn and Google Adwords options! We all know LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network targeted at job seekers and business members. Marketing with LinkedIn will allow AfrAsia Bank to introduce its innovative services and products to other professionals, allow the bank greater flexibility to reach out its targeted audience and why not in job recruitment as well! Google Adwords on the other hand will also allow their target audience actively looking for information about their products and services online.
Today, more and more companies are incorporating social media in their communication programs, where changes are colossal, somewhat overwhelming but definitely breathtaking for communication professionals. Has your organisation been incorporating new social media tools into their strategy and planning? Even for journalists today, social media make things easier. How do you feel the development of technology has altered the relationship between PR executives and journalists?
Now that consumers/customers are driving the communication and social media is undeviating to them, does this make PR professionals nervous? PR 2.0 is certainly not a fad and as it continues to evolve, so will the brand that adheres to the pioneering rules of communication. Some communication professionals are already anticipating the onset of PR 3.0. But regardless of 2.0, 3.0 or even 6.0, the main question will be: How will online audiences change the way communication professionals work and innovate further public relations and marketing communication to reach the gateway to greater PR?!
